Depends on your style of build--do what you like. I prefer Orig Ford colors from the era but that's just me. Cloud Mist Grey is my favorite, Folkstone grey, Coach Maroon (early color), Washington blue or 46-47 Ford Barcelona blue. Black is also hard to beat on a 40--no metallic for me thought. Am looking at a grey color for the next one but unsure at this point. Think it is a 37-38 color.

I love the gloss blacks, maroons, dark blues. They all make the chrome stand out great. There was also a 39 I think it was,it was done in gold several years back, man, it was bitching. Had white interior, chrome reverse wheels, it was perfect.

  8. Although I have a thing for black cars you should listen to any advice offered by olscrounger,he has done enough coupes that he has a pretty good idea of what colors work best. HRP

go to my albums--there are several cloud mist cars a folkstone grey coupe and a 47 Barcelona blue coupe. Have always resisted maroon but the one of Lou Wells looks terrific.
Yes Bobwop-I'm still kickin' and lookin for another coupe

155-cropped.jpg Did mine Orange with Orange and Gold Metal-flake in the first coat of clear. I wanted the '60's catch your eye gasser look. But if I was doing a street car. I would really consider the Maroon. Cindy Monroe photo.

Although my car is black, and it's what I wanted I'm a fan of many of the stock colors. I'm drawn to cars painted in period correct colors especially if they are built in a stock appearing style which IMHO is timeless. Definitely check out olscrounger's builds they're ALL nice.

Grey for old cars (Fords) is like a grey haired old man, people look right past us looking for something with substance.
I'm not talking about Cloudmist & Folkstone greys, they are not really grey.

Whereas the English Grey, that I have on my 31 Chevy Landau Phaeton, was Grey in name only. Its a Green Shade. One example where the two tone matches the car right. 31 pic.JPG

Researching lead my to this older thread. I have never seen 39’ Dartmouth green or 39’ Tropican green in person. Only on a paint chart online. I am also a color deficient person.
Please reply if you can give a little direct as to the comparison between the two.

I love the way you did your car. You nailed the 60's look.

Thanks...took a while to get it that way. Still trying to finish the hood and get it on. Maybe this year. Gene.

I like to look at and appreciate the original colors and even the rings and hubcap early style 39 Deluxe and 40 Fords, but personally they look more like restored originals to me and that is not my thing. I like the 60's street and drag race look with chrome or mag wheels, paint jobs with colors from that era and late 50's and 60's performance motors .

I had 4 black 40 coupes, 1 primer gray, 1 red, 1 black with flames, sold my last one 3 years ago. Just bought this maroon coupe and I think it is the best one I've had. 27. I'm a bit partial to these colors..but really there are many very good choices out there that work well. Personal taste thing.

Mine is Folkstone Grey. Was tht color when I bought it and the ease to keep it looking clean and shiny without having to wipe it down every time I drive it makes it a winner to me.
