    Hi guys,

Can someone tell me (1) what years and (2) what size
BBC motors had starters with the offset mounting bolt pattern as opposed to the inline pattern??

    Thank you in advance!

you mean the ones that used two long bolts? with the aluminum nose? for the large diameter flywheel?

I usually use my standard of 1977 chevy C20 pickup. You can say 350 or 454, they both are the same part, number 3510

Guess I've never run across a BBC starter with inline pattern. Guess my question is what BBC had a inline pattern?
I normally order a starter for a 1970 454 Chevelle so I get the highest torque rating possible, regardless of what I'm putting it on. They also have the staggered pattern.

  4. Pretty sure you can spec a 99 3500 and get the factory mini too.

GM used two different bolt patterns on the bottom of the block. The straight bolt pattern is normally used with the 153T flywheel, and the offset or staggered starter bolt pattern is normally used with the 168T flywheel. Some Chevy blocks have both starter bolt patterns on the block.

be careful with this, the later starters use metric bolts, while the 454 blocks are US thread. Make sure to get the correct bolts....I'm running a 99 3500 454 starter on my 55, I got the correct bolts from the dealer, they have a metric diameter on the shank, and US threads. They're funky looking, and they work perfect.

Ok, here's a question. Say I have an early 454. Now this will be a 427, courtesy of a 396 crank and 427 pistons. Here's the rub. Can I use a 56 chevy stick bellhousing and flywheel with a bellhousing mounted starter?:D Or can I use a block mounted starter housing ? Will it fit in the sbc snout hole? Jim? Lippy

you can use the old small block bellhousing with the 3 bolt starter on a big block. I've done it a couple times. And you can use the block mounted starter on it, if you want. May or may not need to do some clearancing

Yes you can, but why would you use a 56 flywheel on a 427? I think you would be asking for trouble.Get a new flywheel with the same tooth count.Offset bolts were large diameter (168) and straight across were small diameter flywheels (153)
