Hi guys, I'm talking to a guy about picking up a set of closed chamber heads for my recently acquired 454 motor home engine. The seller of the heads tells me theres no difference between the two heads but I'm seeing that the 215 heads have a A/C boss that results in a partial obstruction in the flow. Anyone run the two different heads on the same motor? I'm looking at the 063 heads to get the CR up to 9:1. the 454 is a 1982 model with 40K miles on it. thanks, Charlie
I would try to get a set of 702's & have 2:19 & 1:88 stainless undercut valves done by a good machine shop. I am guessing these will be used on a street car,I have used these on low compression piston big blocks to boost compression to roughly 9:1 - 9:7 depending on head gaskets and flow good to around the 6,000 -6,500 range. This post will more than likely have your head spinning with opinions, but like Patrick Swayze said in Roadhouse " Opionions vary!" I just gave you my 2 cents worth & what has worked for me.
another type you might want to look into is the 96 -99 7.4 vortech heads they were 99 cc's and have a fast burn combustion chamber . only thing you need to watch out for is the special headgasket they have to use with the gen 4 blocks as the gen 5 and 6 headgaskets will make it leak water . many of the O/t chevelle guys swear by these heads .
thanks, I'll keep my eye open for the 702's as well. the price on the 063/215 combo though has got my eye. if there's no issues with running different head I'd like to get these....just for the reason you describe, to boost the CR
