    Very cool car. The only thing that looks suspicious is the HEI distributor. Maybe they tried to get it running because they couldnt set the points.

    Dean, I followed and enjoyed your posts on the Inbomber. You seem to have a knack for locating pretty good cars. As you may find out there were a whole bunch of these old solid axle dragcars and tracking down the history can be somewhat challenging.

    Your car has a 6000 tach so it was not one of the high horsepower cars which does not mean a whole lot in that most of these drag cars had the engines changed at some point in time. Your car still has the original front saddle mount which only works with a small block. To run a big block there were some other mounts made by Bill Thomas and Hurst (I have three different styles of big block mounts for these cars).

    The other point is that these Corvettes did not run gas (at least in NHRA and AHRA I believe until 1968). They ran in Modified Sports through the 1967 season when they did away with modified sports and placed the cars in the gas classes. Most small block Vettes ran in DM/SP (with some exceptions I am sure). The hood looks more like Modified production, what I seem to remember in 1969 and early 70s; the gassers and M/SP ran injection most of the time. This car could have evolved though so who knows what changes were made. Did it have a roll bar?

    Also the upstance was pretty common and probably more common prior to better tire technology of 1968 onwards. Placing blocks between the frame and under the radiator supports was more common than straight axles and often the guys removed the anti swaybar as the links were too short. I have my car raised and made a longer and stiffer link system, although with the changes in height it may not work quite like the general intended. The front section treatment was common but I do not believe that the wheel openings are cut. Generally if the wheelwells are cut it is more often the rear dog legs to accommodate a tire larger that 29”. You can raise the car to accommodate a larger tire but the dogleg stays somewhat constant.

    I saw the car on ebay and am happy to see that someone that likes the hotrod style bought it. You will have fun with the car I am sure. The best way to track its history may be to find someone who remembers the car (unless of course you are lucky enough to see some lettering ghosted under the paint). I have saved quite a few Vette pictures but as it sits it does not ring a bell. As I said it may have evolved so keep asking questions and someone may remember it. Good find-Jim

    Congrats on the purchase !! Does the serial number indicate it to be a 58 ?? The 58 trunk lid had the one yr. only chrome bars (and the "washboard" hood which was obviously swapped out for the big scoop) Just curious, not that it really matters.

    BAD PENNY- It is a '58, someone just took off the bars on the trunk. We will probably put those back when we find a good original pair. The original washboard hood also came with the car. Someone cut a hole in it, then went to the hood that is on the car now.
    3day- I saw those videos, very cool! It must have been so much fun back then. I was starting to really think the car was the red '58 in the videos, that of Sal Accardi, but in speaking with his son Sal Jr. I learned that the car was restored back to new and sold in 2000, so obviously not the same Corvette...

    If it was a real racer or serious street car back then, it would have a 57-64 Olds/Pont rear. The stock rear could be easily broken by a 327. With no bumpers, it was a Gas class car. Been there, did that. :D

    Very nice find ! I would leavee the 327 and maybe throw on a cross ram dual quad intake and a magneto.and leave the hood off

    Quite possible, Sal was known for his neat toys. His shop still stands over on Long Island Ave in Deer Park, think it got turned into a taxi garage or fuel oil company.

    He was more lately known for his sanitary NASCAR modifieds. But his red Vette did run the drags at Islip. Be neat if a definite link could be established. Too bad he passed away last year.
