I found this while checking out some boxes of bearings I was given, it sure looks like a Total Seal top ring. At the top of the paper is a code that looks like it would have been printed in 1932. I even found some chrome model A rings but not a complete set. Amazing what think is new, maybe just to us. P
Here is my McDowell overhead cam attachment on an SR Fronty head. Cam uses shaft and bevel gear drive.
Hello I have a question about the Winfield heads that's being reproduced. How is the high and low compression achieved? Is the low comp head a high comp head with a flycut above the piston? Or is the high comp head a low comp head that's been surfaced? I need to know since I have an idea about cutting the area above the piston as much as possible and run pop up pistons. Any idea how much material there is in the roof of the combustion chamber? Thanks, Magnus
The heads currently being produced by Specialty Ford Parts have no flycut, they are flat. The high and low compression are achieved by the size of the actual combustion chamber. I don't have any idea of how much material there is in that area. Your best bet for answers to your questions would be to call Jim Gordon at Specialty Ford Parts 626 280 4546, he makes them. He did get a little upset with me when I told him I had modified mine.
Now this is a surprise not only the pictures shown here but the albums on his profile make sure you all have a look. Maybe we should take all this extreme banger porn and make a calender or it would make a great article for the Rodders journal fantastic stuff guys keep it coming. Shoulders sore but at least its being worked on.
I just measured a new Specialty Winfield head, the chamber is .45" deep & the thickness over the piston is .40" with no counterbore. Compared to a stock head it appears that .200" has been milled off. Either of the two variations of my head will allow .6 deep counterbore. Hope the pictures show this ok, Pat
Hope you're feeling better soon and I agree!!!- 25 Mercury, is that your black '23 in your profile pics? I've drooled over it for YEARS on the NWVS site
Speaking of door stops this is going to be wall art pretty soon. Its really pitted but surprisingly it has no visible cracks, but the spark plug threads are gone. The mice like it.
Thanks for the info Pat. Your head is nice and looks to be quite a good option for what I want. But if possible I'd like to use an old head design. I want to keep it pre 1950. I guess reworked heads and popup pistons is a bit from what they would do back then. but I'm thinking "What could ave been although it might never have". So use old stuff and old techniques to make the most of a banger. So either go with a head made up for it or rework an old one. One might be able to cut out the combustion chamber roof and weld in a new one. best would be to find a cheap cracked head and give it a try, but it needs to be aluminium since I can't weld cast iron that good... doing something like that in cast iron would be asking for cracks of course. //Magnus
Thanks for the compliments, my designs are influenced by Harry Millers products from 1938, and there were pop up heads prior to WWII, but I respect your ideas, Pat
Yup, the black 23 Mercury is mine. A long term project, it's my special baby. I was wondering where all those drool marks came from.
No Joke, It's April already. Here is the new meet thread. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=685565 .
Thanks for putting me on to this fellow Crazy ! He was able to supply a couple of the correct Grose Jets (tested) for my new Zeniths as well as the filler tube. Very nice people to deal with ...5 star rating. Thanks again, Ron
