"Side-bar questions..." Since all of us are modified in one way or another - #1) I am running 16" x 40 bent spoke Kelsey Hayes wire wheels and had the rears widened to a healthy 6 1/2", but I can not find a tube flap wide enough that will cover the now wider dropped center area where the spoke heads come through the rim. What have you successfully used to solve this problem? I thought about buying a pair of 13" inner tubes for a small foreign tire and cutting them down, but am not sure if these are too big / too small. #2) Can someone please do a simple show & tell sample of the gear ratio, speed & RPM chart on the first page of the Banger Information @accuautoparts.com?

He's 74............just looking for a decent sounding muffler not something that sounds like a VW. Right now I think he's leaning towards just eliminating the muffler and running a straight pipe. If I put something on it and it ended up sounding like this one he would probably light it on fire:

This is how the Dodge Bros. replacement head looks today. A little more welding. Some machining and it's old meets new. I don't know why one picture is there twice. See if I can fix that. weld 001.JPG weld 002.JPG

I have followed Rich's New head build with interest. I also know he put a Y block head on a Plymouth 4. Has anyone done something similar converting a late model overhead valve head for use on an A/B Ford?

Frank? Aardema has done a bunch of them. Subaru heads I believe, among others. Made his own head from scratch. As has Roy Creel and Harold Johanson. And lots of other guys I bet. But the point is if you take it one step at a time, anybody should be able to do it. If I can it can't be that hard.

Bill Stipe put a SBC head on one. I have an Olds 455 head that George Miller adapted to a B block and ran on the street and at hill climbs.

  7. Just returned from a Memorial for Bob Kehoe.
A very well attended event with some very notable Racers.
I would bet the combined records and speeds attained at this one gathering would be staggering.
Gentleman and quiet is the way I remember Bob, PJ and the group assembled shed some light on this very down to earth Man, We will miss Him.

  8. First time post on the banger thread and looking for advise, hints, tips, etc..
In the process of acquiring a deuce pickup with a "B" motor. Truck is fairly stock and not 100% sure of the condition of the drivetrain. We did drive it on and off the trailer so guess that should equate to something.
At first I thought I might go the flattie V8 route but having discovered this thread have decided to stay with the banger but help it move the little pickup along a little faster.
Not very familiar with these motors and overwhelmed with all the info available.
My intent would be to have something decently dependable but be able to keep up with traffic so 65-70 mph. I like the looks of dual carbs and see that the Stromberg 81`s are popular.
Lots of head information, Brumfield, Lion, etc with varying compression ratios.
Lots of distributor information as well.
So, without breaking the bank with a Riley overhead conversion, what would the group recommend to warm my "B" motor up?
Also, transmission question...stay with the stock or change it? I like the looks of the stock rear and would like to retain it with very little modification, meaning no cutting of the "K" member. I am trying to muddle through the T5 threads with little luck. What are the logistics and or benefits of a 39 trans?

  9. Nice truck!

Posted using the HAMB app on my iPhone.... How's that for traditional!?!?

  10. Is there anything for model t? I am aware of some nice aftermarket parts, and I have several speed books, but anyone have some engine porn or tip used in the past for T motors?

  12. hb32, buy the book 4-bangers and me by Jim Brierley. Answers a lot of your questions. If it was mine a good 6-1 head and downdraft carb will make a big difference even with the B cam. As far as the trans since you have a B trans already you can upgrade it with 40-48 gears. Keeps everything simple and bolt in.

  17. Book is on its way and now looking for some parts as well.
Needing a higher compression head, dual intake, a pair of Stromberg 81`s and a side plate for a "B" motor.
    Not much in the classifieds.

Great Video. Number 620 Norm Hutton? Was that the Silver City Special built by Mark Phelan (Gen Gow)? I bought it from Mark, did some work to it and sold it to norm.

    Hello
Has anyone used a early version of reds header where the intake ports on the block side doesn't have the welded ring around them? If so, is there a way to get a good seal? I see that the newer ones only use a single header gasket.
When I took the header off because of a vacuum leak, I found that they put a intake to header gasket on the block side to take up the gap, but my question is, how do I make sure that everything will tighten down and seal both intake and exhaust? I put a straight edge across the exhaust ports and the intake gasket slides around under it. Should I bring the exhaust ports down so the intake gasket is snug? I am worried that the intake won't seal if I don't.
    Thanks.

I think you are going to have to add a weld bead around the intake ports and have the block side of the header resurfaced so all six holes are perfectly flush if you want that thing to seal up. I think that would be easier and better than cutting what yo have down to the flange since the weld appears to be on the back side of the flange.

Well I ended up using a intake gasket between the exhaust ports and used copper high temp silicone on exhaust and permatex #2 on intake ports. So far it's working, but if it blows out again , I will have to have to weld rings on intake ports and have the whole thing surfaced even all the way across.
