dude, I saw her in Tijuana with a horse!

Seriously, I don't mind admitting I like bugs. That rad one is cool, but I wouldn't wanna drive it. I have a 59 Cabriolet (vert) and a (new) Gazelle 29 Mercedes roadster on a 70 pan with a rebuilt 1600 and auto-stick, new everything from brakes to rubber with 56 miles on it. My grandfather built it in 83-84 and never drove it. Got a folder with over $10K worth of receipts (too much for a kit car, I think). I've got it now and really don't know what I'm gonna do with it, but since it was his I guess it will stay in the family.
I've owned six, including a 67 bus and a 61 sliding roof beetle. I think theres just something about the simplicity that appeals to hot rodders, even if some won't admit it. They used to be cheap, but restoring my 59 has become anything but. I'm about $2K into just new parts for the convertible top. and upholstery (not counting the seats). Damn, I could build a Deuce for what I'm gonna have in this ragtop beetle!

always loved aircooled VW´s ! That car is awesome !!!
Even though it´s not a "hotrod"...the VW Bug also deserves a little place in the american hotrod history .
It´s been around, hopped up, customized and raced since the first day it came to the United States in 1950 !! Therefore it´s a part of american car culture !

If it were a Model A with the same chop and the same stance I'd care for it even less.

We all have to start somewhere. I drove bugs as my first cars in high school. It was definately the simplicity that drew me in. I learned to work on them and customize them myself. That is, until I graduated into the big leagues, now its just double the cylinders.... =)

reminds me of the gasmonkey greasemonkey car...a little over the top for me, and yeah I'd feel the same way if it was a model a.

  19. What's with all the vintage retro crap on the roof ?
  20. The VW powered FED is owned by the Lauffer family, of VW Paradise
Kris (one of the sons) drives it
Jason (the other son) wrenches on it
Scott (the dad) is there, but has pretty much let the kids take over.I was building an open-wheeled VW, 1969 body (sorry, Ryan) with a 5 inch chop, Oval window sunroof clip, suicide doors, hidden hinges, Super Bell 4 inch drop axle, Speedway hairpins 16 and 17 inch Ford wires with Coker wide whites, and a fire-breathing 2054cc engine that would kick the living shit out just about anything (160 horsepower at the flywheel, 1600 pound car, do the math...)
Didn't get it finished, and didn't think a fenderless car in the temperate rain forest of the NorCal redwoods was the most practical thing, so I sold it to the former bass player for Ted Nugent, and used the $$ to move here.

I like it. Fabrication is really nice. Even if you don't like the medium you have to respect the work.
