Ok...so knew i was going to fight with this stearing column when i first steped into this build. I didnt sweat to much because i know what im doing has been done by so many others. So when the time came to mock up the stearing after i mocked up where the motor would be. I did my home work and found headers made for exactly what i am doing. I go to put them on and i still have a fit issue.
So..here is what i did. Leaving the stock rear end in place. I bolted up my 36?38? Trans with the motor on. Centered the motor in the frame. Im a 1/16 off on one side a bit more than the other. The transmission is almost perfectly centered. From the pics you can see how i plan on mounting the motor.
So what step did i miss? The stock steering box still hits the new header alot. And even if i did have it clear...looks to be the column tube will hit the engine head.
Now..i have done lots of home work on av8 builds. I know the stock column, the transmission, and stock rear end is not the prime choice. I have the more desirable parts for the next build. This truck is being built for just working on my sheet metal skills..and work on my tig welds before i start my builds for some of my other A's.

So back to the problem...what am i missing !? Orginally i thought i needed the exhaust that goes up and over for the f1 column in av8 builds...but the guys at the shop said this maifold should fit the stock column. Any help would be great guys.

The f1 box has to have the mounting flange on the end repositioned. The box has to move towards the frame. Several ways to do it. Some folks make a new bolt flange by grinding off the old one then making a new flange. That way you can reposition the box closer to the frame. There is a guy on the Hamb that sells a plate with the holes cut and ready to weld on after the other flanges are ground off. I personally took my box apart then cut the sector snout off the box and shortened and and reshaped the end to bolt up in the stock model a frame. Then welded the two pieces back together. Like I said, several ways to skin it. I will take a picture of mine tomorrow and post it.

I cut the flange off the Model A and positioned it on the F1 box keeping the same deminsion as the A box wich does move it closer to the rail. Used the original mounting holes in the frame. The colum comes up directly between the original 32 pedals.

So what about the column tube hitting the head? Are the early v8s not as wide?

I can't see any of your pics, but after you move the box out the column will move out too. I have an 8ba in 29 roadster with a f100 box. the solution with this car was to make a bump out in the frame rail

Yea bumping out the frame is an option...just was hoping to find a way that looked clean. You gave any pics of your frame bumped out?

nothing useful here at work.... it looks pretty clean, but not as clean as cutting the flange and welding a new one on further in. the bump starts just after the center exhaust hole and finishes about mid cowl. tapered in and out.

After the box is repositioned you will also need to modify the exhaust manifold to clear the steering tube. I will get you pictures this evening.

I've got a ding in my manifold to clear the box but the exhaust is plenty far from the tube.....

how far forward is your box??

this pic is pretty far out but you can see where my box is located,

I used a 30' Germer box, cut the flange off, poked it through the frame, notched the fire wall, notched a little off frame, added stiffner at frame notch, skimmed a little off the head fins. Used a Fenton cast iron header. Had to bend lower rail down a little at stock headlight switch.

At final assembly, had motor in first, then installed column (it's a trick to wiggle it in there), then the header.

Look at pics in my album. You're not missing anything - it's tight no doubt.

I used the 30 Model A box and made a box on the outside of the frame to move it over. Still is very close.

Got it guys! Thanks. Im going to take another look at mine in the morning if i get time. Shifty those pics helped alot. The f1 box looks to take up as much room as a stock column and box.
