Hot Rods Automotive terms that don’t make sense....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fortunateson, Nov 29, 2023.

  1. I've been in the automotive service industry since the late 60s and the term "frost plug" is what they have been called before and through my lifetime, in these parts at least. So yes, right or wrong, core plugs are what the manufacturers call them, but if I went to any of the local parts stores and asked for core plugs I'd be looking at a blank stare of wonderment. If I asked for frost plugs I'd very quickly get what I was looking for.

It's just a name, use the one that people around you understand and life goes easier. :)

  2. If used on automotive or whatever, but the term ''first time EVER'' doe's not or ever will make it more the first time than the first time ....period!! JW

We take the second "C" out. Merc-aff-aye. Not Mick-caff-aye.

Michelin's are racing tyres (sometimes called rason tars, but not in Australia).

Centre and center are interchangeable, and pronounced the same as that bloke Senna who drove the fancy race cars.

    Cheers,

    Also known as a "TRAFFICATOR"
They were very cool back in the day, for trucks.

I recently bought this one from a fellow HAMBER @Atomic Reverend Alexander. It was attached to a truck that he bought at an auction.
This is the truck that it came off of.

I gave it to a good friend for a Christmas gift, that has an older truck that it will be perfect for.

    I am surrounded by Engineers.

    We don't use incorrect terms.

  8. "We don't use incorrect terms." If you did it would cause confusion. That's why when I go to the parts store I use the term everyone understands, to avoid confusion.

@X38 I wasn’t singling you and your folks out, just making light of the term “dizzy”. :)

I worked in engine engineering for all of my career. You can bet the farm that not one engineering drawing or parts list had the word “freeze plug” spelled out.

They were always “core plugs”, or “expansion plugs”

A Welch plug is a particular design of core plug. Supposedly the convex Welch plug is a design originated by engineers of the obscure and long defunct Welch automotive company.

An expansion plug is probably only correctly called a core plug when it seals a sand core in a sand casting. Otherwise, it would be an expansion plug, ie an oil gallery plug

This might come as a surprise to some of you guys, but there is a long, colourful history centred around the English language prior to it landing in your wonderful country and being "tuned up" by your good selves to become what is now known as American English (an oxymoron if ever there was one)....... :D:D:D

  15. Don't quite know what you mean, but in any case, I'm cool. Words are funny.

From a local supplier, covering all bases :D:
Probably more of an original Welch plug design:

I had an engine that I forgot to drain the water out. In middle of winter I went to start it and saw the core plugs suspended out of the block 1/2" or so by a column of freeze.

  17. Freeze core caps! Or maybe hats?

  19. Of course not. I don’t expect to see the words “support thingy” on suspension bridge plans either. I’m just trying to lighten it up a bit. There is enough crazy stuff going on in our country and the world to loose sleep over dizzy.

How about 'horsepower'? Time and distance I get it. Who's horse? Not all horses have the same 'horsepower' do they? Torque is REALLY what moves any vehicle, no?

I attibute that nonsense of saying "dizzy" to Yanks who decide that they want to use an off the wall term that Aussies use to sound cool. Ok if you actually live in Australia but rather lame if you were born in and have lived in the states all of your life.

Were it not for the u.s. adopting your language. It probably wouldn't be the most universally accepted language on the planet ,including your flaws as well as ours !

And there's the problem, the English are living entirely too close to the French . When the Normans moved into England, they took their language with them as evidenced by your spelling of "colour", French is "coleur", American English is "color". And, not to stoke the fire even more, the English, Australians and the French spell "center" wrong. I knew all those English classes I took would eventually pay off. ;)
