#14 above is Enzo Ferrari, finishing second in 1920's Targa Florio, driving a 4.5 liter ALFA.

  4. I don't know the date of this photo or car, but it looks like about the point in time where race car builders were finally starting to grasp the importance of a lower center of gravity.

  5. Number 22, the one before #14 in the Targa Florio shots (post #5356), is also Enzo Ferrari. This time in his first ever race, the 1919 Targa Florio, driving a CMN which looks to be as though it might be a modified Fiat 2B.

This is my latest pencil drawing. Last summer at the Geneva Concourse I was a 1914 Caddilac. It inspired me to do a drawing of it as if it was hauling ass through Elgin, back in the day...

Ed very nice-reminiscent of my favorite Peter Helck. Hope you get "inspired" to do a few more of the old racers-it is an era I cannot seem to get enough of-Jim

I was thinking 1932, which would make it the #3 Tarbet/Cragar Spl... and a Gilmore car. :D Yes/No?

Great photo, of the car that is on the TOP of my "Dream Car" list, the Sparks-Warwick #33 Gilmore Oil Car, driven by Bob Swanson at INDY. If I could get a good copy for my collection please send me a PM. [IMG]

Does anyone know what happened to this Bob Swanson driven car? The stretched Midget that he drove so well in the Vanderbilt Cup race? Was it returned to Midget wheelbase and raced again on the West Coast?

"The identity of the race car's driver is a mystery. We know that this photograph was taken near 14 North Hanson Street in Easton where James Covey operated a gas station until 1967. There he sold not only gasoline, but penny candy, fish, and Christmas trees, in addition to repairing cars and lawn mowers. The race car was identified as a 1929 Bentley, but we do not know the driver's identity"

  27. Notice that in those days the pits were pits!
