History Auto racing 1894-1942

A press photo dated 1935 from the Indianapolis 500.....

 

An unknown but nicley crafted road racing special from Argentina......

 

#14 above is Enzo Ferrari, finishing second in 1920's Targa Florio, driving a 4.5 liter ALFA.

 

I don't know the date of this photo or car, but it looks like about the point in time where race car builders were finally starting to grasp the importance of a lower center of gravity.

 

Number 22, the one before #14 in the Targa Florio shots (post #5356), is also Enzo Ferrari. This time in his first ever race, the 1919 Targa Florio, driving a CMN which looks to be as though it might be a modified Fiat 2B.

 

From the code in the caption I guess this is an 'unknown' - it is a 1929 Studebaker.

This is my latest pencil drawing. Last summer at the Geneva Concourse I was a 1914 Caddilac. It inspired me to do a drawing of it as if it was hauling ass through Elgin, back in the day...

Great photo, of the car that is on the TOP of my "Dream Car" list, the Sparks-Warwick #33 Gilmore Oil Car, driven by Bob Swanson at INDY. If I could get a good copy for my collection please send me a PM.

 

Does anyone know what happened to this Bob Swanson driven car? The stretched Midget that he drove so well in the Vanderbilt Cup race? Was it returned to Midget wheelbase and raced again on the West Coast?

There he sold not only gasoline, but penny candy, fish, and Christmas trees, in addition to repairing cars and lawn mowers. Notice that in those days the pits were pits!

 

Looks to be the White Triplex Special. I imagine the weight of those three Liberty engines would take a bit of stopping once control was lost. I have an idea it had no suspension either.
