Yes, it is. Despite the caption which indicates it's a steam car!

That's actually the car generally considered to be the first British racing car, the 16hp Napier H70, built to Edge's order. The picture is presumably from its only race (it did run some hillclimbs too), the Paris-Toulouse-Paris on July 25th 1900. Nice of the French to depict it in en panne

It was an ill-fated expedition. On the way to the 3.30 am start a water pipe cracked, so a cycle blacksmith was roused from his bed to fix it (David Venables says in his Napier book that he was "knocked up" for this, but that's just another example of how we're two nations separated by a common language!). They were 45 minutes late at the start, where Edge collided with Camille Jenatzy's Bolide. The Belgian car had to retire, although the Napier started, but almost immediately began to misfire on one and then two cylinders. Edge decided to pull out at Nemours, about 50 miles into the race, and returned to Paris. The picture was presumably taken at Nemours (which Venables renders incorrectly as Namours, presumably confusing it with Namur in Belgium).

Although you can't make him out on the picture, the riding mechanic is CS Rolls.

Nice postcards T-H. Do you know the story with this survivor? Please tell me it wasn't found in this place.

I think this is just where it ended up for a little bit. It later on was restored beautifully and I think that you can find a similar photo in one of the Ralph Stein books along with the restored car........

A photo I just found of the start of an unknown race. In addition to the early four cyl. Duesenberg a Case is clearly visible.

Can anyone identify the cars, drivers or the track?

That "Before" photo of the Stutz is in Ralph Stein's the Treasurary of the Automobile. The very first "Old Car" book Aunte Betty gave me for Christmas 1961, still the best book on the hobby IMO. :)

Probably just a typo, but that should of course be Édouard Brisson. They came second.

The first six cars to finish that year were all either British or American: two Bentleys, two Chryslers, the Stutz and an Alvis. This was the first time since the race started in 1923 that there had been no French cars in the top six. 1929 was even worse for the French: the top 8 places fell to four Bentleys, a Stutz, two Chryslers and a Lea-Francis. In that order. 1930 was no better, with Bentley taking the first two places, Talbot 3rd and 4th and a Lea Francis 6th. Even the 5th place Alfa Romeo was British-entered.

French cars sneaked into 4th and 6th places in 1931, but there were only six finishers out of just 26 starters and the 4th-placed La Lorraine-Dietrich was 565km behind the winning (British) Alfa Romeo. It would take until 1937 for the French to win Le Mans again.

A prewar jalopy racer in Texas that has taken out the fence and looks to be on his way right out of the track.

Well, I've compared the photos to the precious few I have of the Atlanta Motordrome, and I'd have to say this looks to be the Motordrome, judging by the construction of the stands and the inside and outside berm.

Wow, incredible photos! This gives us our first look at the construction of the infield of the Motordrome, and makes it quite apparent how much money Asa Chandler poured into it. Amazing stuff, thank you so much for posting them! Do you have any more from this track?

I remember you asking about Atlanta earlier.....I just went looking for the other ones but can't seem to find which site they were on. It might have been the LOC. I will keep looking and post more if I find them.

A very nice poster from Indy circa 1909....

The photo is of A.L. Riker and the caption is; Finish of 1st American auto race at Springfield, L.I.; a l Riker

The car does look like a Riker Electric and the date is 1900 so it may well be him....

I just noticed that this great thread that we all owe Kurtis a big thank you for is coming up on page 200. I think we should let him do the posting that takes it over to 200 and celebrate with some great photos......

He has been busy working on his house lately and I think he has been busy with this enterprise that I found a photo of. I think he is running under cover by changing his name a little and not telling us about it......

So lets all celebrate the odometer turning 200 when it does........
