  4. Getting some miles on the roadster and sorting out some issues. Replaced the fuel shut off valve as it was letting fuel past that was eventually deposited on my garage floor. Rebuilt the Zenith and also added a second ground cable between the engine and the frame as I was having issues turning over when it was hot.

    Still need to repack the waterpump as it's leaking out past the packing nut and making a small mess but we're on our way!

    Getting the parts and pieces to make the Auto Restoration T-5 kit I bought in 2003 work with a stock clutch disc has been a real chore. Waiting for the from seal and ready to put everything back together next week

    ^^^^ I'd like to see the machining to cut the groove for the combustion chamber wire.

    What I find unusual about that 4 port Riley head is that there has been little to no effort made to use the more common and readily available Model A water pump in the re-issuing of this head.

    I know that the angle of the intake port’s face is more conducive to the ‘B’ and ‘C’ water pump, but they’re certainly not as common as an A water pump.

    just my observation.

    Regarding thew Riley heads; seems like we all now know that H&H is reproducing them,
    but there seems to be little actually known about them and their performance if used
    on an otherwise street vehicle. Our cam guru, Jim Brierley, might wish to chime in
    on this topic whenever he has some free time to discuss the good and bad of this otherwise
    unique and desirable head. just my 2 cents worth :D

  13. So, as far as the H&H head is concerned, IMHO, well worth the money.
    I assembled one for a friend, the casting is well done and the machine work is nicely done.
    The interesting change is using a solid bucket with shims to even out the valve stem lengths.
    I do not have any performance data, but I do not see anything that would cause me to think it would not perform.
    As for the comments about "B" pumps, yes, they are not as available. But I do not understand why you would want an old worn out pump and technology as the "A" pumps. I was tired of dealing with the "A" pumps and went to the more modern V8 pumps. Yes an adaptor is required but no more mess under the hood.

  15. August is already better. Motor back in car (original flywheel and pressure plate). It runs, goes forward and back, shifts and stops...... a month to late for Rodtoberfest.....

    Regarding John's comments on the 4 Port- the early 4 ports were like the 2 Ports with the rockers working directly against the valve stems, but Riley did supply heads later on with the bucket design. #40 is running an aluminum 4 port with the buckets. Not sure, but I think the Vesco heads used the buckets, but I have no idea regarding the Butler heads. Perhaps someone knows the whole story. I have a cast iron 4 port without the buckets.

    Seems as though the 2 ports used a Model A water pump.

    anyone heard anything from the father and son team that bought the patterns from Charlie Yapp?

    I've had great luck with the leakless cartridge from Snyders and a new SS shaft. Next best is new packing on a SS shaft if you use water pump grease.... throw some new bearings in it while you are at it....

    Checking in for the month. About had my fill of 40 ford brakes been really kicking my ass. Murphys law has ruled on getting them to work right. I thought i had them figured out and then found another wheel cylinder leaking. roadster brakes.jpg db before after.jpg

    fwiw the ‘39 brake cylinders do require a master with a residual valve
    They will leak if not driven periodically

    My Model B is marking its territory despite me being very careful installing the oil pan. It appears the front seal leaks on one side where the seal meets the pan and block. I’ll probably tackle it again but after I drive it a bit. Oil leaks must just be part of the charm of these 90+year old cars.
    Air cooled Porsches are leakers. as well. They’re said to “sweat horsepower”.
