    I've seen pistons you had to remove a couple wrist pins to get a balanced set. Bill ... hope your well old friend!

    It is for those too lazy to remove the pan to shim the bearings.

    The hole IS a crankcase breather........

    Might be time to Ring the motor if a breather that BIG is required.

    I've seen so many of these Ford motors with various examples of this modification I thought it was factory installed.
