This is just a feeler to see if there is any interest in having some 5 main cranks made for Ford Model A's/B's. We're going to have one made for our new race motor and we want to see if anyone might want one as well. We'd also order rods to go with the cranks as well. Let me know if you're interested.

Could you provide some more information? What mods are required, to the block, to accept the new crank? What is a target price for the crank and rods?

Okay, glad to see we have some interest. As for block mods, if you’re running an A you’ll need to set it up for full oil pressure. We run a B block with an external belt driven oil pump. We’re going to setup our 5 main motor to accept a girdle which doesn’t really require any major mods to the block. Basically the crank is bolted to the girdle with the second and fourth mains and then the crank/girdle assembly is dropped into the block and the girdle acts as the first, third, and fifth main caps. We don’t add any additional main supports or webbing to the block. I’m not 100% sure what we’re going to do for a rear main seal.

We came across a raw girdle casting that’s going to need full machining. One could be made from billet or you can have one cast. The girdle is just a big chunk of aluminum with some windows in it. How you decide to mount the crank is up to you. We’ve even thought about running a stronger 5 main crank in a stock 3 main block.

The rod and crank journals will most likely we setup to accept modern GM-sized insert bearings. We’re thinking about going with a shorter stroke but anything between 4” and 4.25” should be do-able. As best I understand these are billet cranks so changing the crank should mean changing the program and not dies. I can only give a ballpark estimate now. Expect the cranks to be $2500-$2800 each.

I’m working on details for the rods.

I'm guessing Crazydaddyo would also be interested. If he doesn't speak up, send him a PM.

Is the girdle going to be aluminum or steel? Also what kind of time are you talking, 2 weeks? 8 months?

I re-read what I wrote and I can see that I wasn't clear enough. When I say we found a girdle I mean we found ONE girdle for us to use and not a girdle that's going to be available for mass production. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Basically I'm just offering a crank and possibly rods. How you get it into the block is up to you.

    Nate,
I am interested,as in very interested, but I need more details.

What journal sizes will be possible? (main and rod)
Will the cranks be drilled for pressure?
can the 2nd and 4th main be used to feed oil to the rods?
What material will it be made from?
Who will make the cranks? If it is Scat, count me out. (insert doodie joke here)
    When will they be ready?
Is there a deposit? If so how much?

    That's it for now.
Thanks for getting the ball rolling on this.

    Dan

Fair enough. But it is on the website with a price. I assume they would make more. Maybe built to order?

    Hey Dan and everyone else,

I'll find out more specifics here in the next few days. The cranks are either going to come from Scat or SP. If there are any other questions just post them up and I'll do my best to get them answered.

    Thanks,

    Nate

I'm guessing the Kong four banger stuff is fairly rare. Kong obviously did mostly V8 stuff. He isn't around any more so it's hard to say. Maybe Mr. Nelson knows some more.
