Technical Are the 55 and 56 ford steering wheels interchangeable

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Blacktop-Ranger, Apr 8, 2021.

  1. Hey y'all. My friend sent me an eBay listing for a pretty clean 56 crown vic 3 spoke with horn ring steering wheel. Good price too. I have a 55 mainline and was curious if the wheels would be interchangeable before ordering?

  2. The '56 has a shorter steering column to account for the dish in the wheel.

It will fit, I have a '59 wheel on my '52, they all used the same spline. But Crazy Steve makes a good point, the 3 spoke wheels have more dish so the ring ends up in a different position. Sit in your car, imagine the wheel is a few inches closer to you (and also check the diameter, I think they lose an inch overall between 55 and 56 but I could be wrong about that) and make sure you fit comfortably. I didn't have an issue but depending on how your car is set up, you might.

  4. The depth of the wheel is different but they will swap just fine.
