I am trying to source an externally threaded 11/16-18 tie rod tube (in chrome if possible) for a model A w/ 40 ford brakes. It looks to be measuring 48" center to center at the rod ends but so far I've only been able to find internally threaded tubes. Any ideas?
External threads usually means that it is a solid rod. A length of the proper grade of steel rod 3/4 inch rod that you have had a machine shop put 11/16 threads on and then take to a chrome shop to have chromed will do the trick as most likely there isn't a source for the item already made up.
I'm assuming that you're using the '28-34 tie rod ends since you're looking for an externally threaded tie rod. Those are solid round stock tie rods, the thread is actually 11/16-24 - which is somewhat of a bastard thread. I can't speak for an off-the-shelf chrome tie rod, but I'm pretty sure Mac's has some new ones.
Thanks CTaulbert! You're spot on. I just broke the ends loose and checked the pitch. It is indeed solid and 11/16-24. I'll give these guys a call tomorrow and get this thing rolling. Thanks everyone.
As of this week, Macs is two weeks out of stock on this item. The one you want is actually 43 3/4" +-. If your chroming it I'd get some stock and have it chromed after threading. Also I wouldn't use regular hot rolled stock it's usually way too soft for tierods.
