I picked up a complete running 409 out of a 61 chev impala. It has 2x4 intake. Anyone know what the hp & torque specs are? I'm thinking of possably putting it in my A coupe instead of the flatty.I would be running a 700r4 behind it. DAVE

    Are you sure it is a 409..not a 348 ?

61 Chevrolets had the 348....looks just like a 409..... [IMG]......but the oil drip stick is on the opposite side.

I have forgotten which side is 348 and which is 409......been too many years....

I like the "fresh" orange scent. Great for cleaning grease off of wifes kitchen floor. [IMG]

Seriously, Stump pulling motors. If it's a factory 2X4 I believe it was rated at 425HP. A friend of mine years ago had a brother who knew those engines inside and out. If you have specific questions I may be able to contact him.

  5. 409 came out in 61. There were only 142 61 Impala SS 409's made. However, they never came with the 2x4 in 61. So who knows. Get the numbers off of it. Go to www.348-409.com and run the numbers there. ANY 409 is worth the bucks, and 348's are catching up in popularity. 348 dipsticks are on driver's side. 409's are on passenger side.

Passenger side dipstick. I'm pretty sure this isnt the original engine in this car. I'll get the #s off it tonight.DAVE

  7. cool. Is the intake an Offy? Or does it have the Winters snowflake? If it is an original 61, it is NOT going to have the correct 2x4 intake. They were ALL 360hp 409's (the only year rated at 360hp) and they were all 1x4's. But if it is an original 61 block heads etc... that is BIG $$$$. Rarest of all W engines except the legendary Z-11.

Weren't there 2 versions of the 409? The early ones were not "true" 409s but something else made into a 409,and those were not the best quality. Then they made true 409s that worked really well?
Either way it will make that A MOVE!

  11. OCP...

There are two different types of 409s... one for cars and one for trucks. Is this what you are referring to? The truck 409s have a notch in the bore to lower the compression ratio. It also unshrouds the exhaust valves. Makes for an idea blower engine. I don't think there were any "bad" 409's. Just different versions... They had the trucks, the low performance 409, the high performance 409, and the OH MY GOD 409 Z-11.

Late in 1961 the 409 engine was released. Because of it's late arrival, production numbers were low in the first year.

The total production figures for 409's in '61 was only 142! Making them very rare today.
    1961 409 4.3125 3.50 360@5800 409@3600 11.25:1 4 bbl 2x4 was not available in 1961, but they were in 62, and the hp in 62 with 2x4's was 409, and the torque was 420ft.lbs. 1963 and on was 425/425
if you give me the casting numbers i will run them for you....thanks,mike

  14. Might OCP be referring to the "Mystery Engine" used in the 63(?) Daytona 500?....it wasn't a 409 at all if that may be what he is talking about. The mystery engine was the predecessor to the 396 I believe and they definitely had problems with it, not finishing the race...
