Butch'r IS a great guy......once you get to know him.
Back in the mini truck 80's, I pulled into his shop and inquired about getting my newly applied graphics pinstriped, Butch'r walked up to my truck, and in the road dust, took his finger and striped the edge of one of the shapes, told me "Hey, now you can tell all your buddies that the Butch'r striped your truck!"
We laugh NOW, I was devastated back then!
    Hahaha

My dad has two boxes of slides from Bee Line in the late 60s. He was stationed out there and liked to take pics of the cars, also had some funny stories of racing on some road out there. :D

in '79 i was attending AAI. worked at the 76 station on the corner of 55th and glendale. we used to drive our cars out to beeline for the midnite drags. was alot of fun driving back to the poloniaisn (sp) palms apts with the headers uncorked. i remember going and watching some funnycar races once something like north vs south or east vs west.

I wasn't born by the time Beeline closed but I've heard lots of stories from my Pop and some of his buddies. Unfortunately they were more into floozies then photos. I drive past that old tower every now and again and wonder about how much fun they used to have blasting down Indian School on their way out to the track. Sometimes I feel like I was born 40 or 50 years too late... Its really neat to see the pictures from "back in the day".

  13. well looks like I'm not the only one to resurect this thread.. I remember hearing a story of when some jet cars would run there.. or it might have been tire smoke.. cant remember.. but anyways sometimes the smoke would engulf the 87 highway... thats good for traffic.. but In those days I would bet that 87 wasn't very heavily traveled.. The west valley to Jerome run is great and seeing that timing tower is one of the sights I love to see...

  16. timing tower is still there.. with Firebird and Speedworld I don't think it would be a wise investment to open it back up. i wonder if anyone has sent in a pic for dragstrips of the past

Nice pics! Ironic I caught this thread. I'm in AZ for a conference this week at Ft McDowell Resort off Hwy 87. I have 2 maps and one map calls Hwy 87 "Duthie-Martin Hwy" and the other map calls it "Beeline Hwy". I'm looking for somthing to do beside spend cash at the casino. Is the Dragstrip landmark nearby?

If you go south on HWY 87 (Beeline Hwy) towards Mesa about 3-5 miles start looking to your left (east) and you will see the tower or whats left of it.

  28. Anyone remember Eddie Cluff's black Willy's The Glass Rat? That was a wild one, you had to be there to get the full experience. If I remeber right it had 180 degree headers and when he came out of the hole at about 8gs it sounded like 20gs! He had a really trick front suspension that let the front come way up. The lift was so high that the front wheels just barely scittered on the pavement when the 90/10s were doin what they do - Did ya see it before it fell off the trailer at Indian Bend? I wish there were pictures it was so bad ass! I heard they couldn't fix it because the body had been acid dipped a bit too much. So tell me. Am I remembering this car properly. I know he built an Austin but where is he now?

  29. Nice pics. I have some too, when I find them, will post. Note the '70 Winters pics does not have the 'new' block tower that stands today. Had to be built in 1970 because I am pretty sure it was used for the '71 Winters.

    Great pics from Beeline.

I was just a kid in the late 1970's and remember the smoke over the highway.

    Keep the pics coming
