I can see how it would be difficult in a street application but...........definately a 'trick set-up'! 6sally6
"Potvin guy" from minn. Was running one on his tbucket for years , don't know if he still is ..? Google " potvin guy t bucket"
There was a guy here in San Jose,Morgan Hill,Gilroy area that had that setup on a Studebaker,I think a 53

Check out the Larry Erickson Chevy high boy from about 15-20 years ago with a potvin blown small block and a track nose. Very unique and very complicated.
Larry's Chevy is now part of Wes Rydell's Collection and is housed at Wes' Toy Shop in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It gets taken out on occasion. I always thought the mag being mounted on a right angle drive and poking through the firewall into the cab was a neat touch.
Now........tell me those ain't coooool"! 6sally6 PS Oh yeah........I had forgotten about The Orange Crate.
1930's Bentley's had crank driven blowers from the factory. I think there were a few MG's and Mercedes of the same era equipped with crank driven blowers as well.
Rich is correct- here's a pic of a supercharged Cord engine, with the transmission sticking out front (as it should):
A couple years before he passed away Barry Lobeck showed up at Carlisle with a complete mint Potvin kit for small block Chevy. Always wondered if he sold it or built something around it.
Hello, When we started our drag racing builds in 1958-60, there were all kinds of motor set ups to make the drag racing cars go fast and faster. Most could afford some carburetors of different types. Fuel injection was the hot ticket with the top mount superchargers next in popularity. Some racers tried all sorts of combination of induction to get the most out of their motors. The photo depicts a build from the 1954 time period. Streamlining at the time was thought of as an extra way to gain more speed with the smooth effect. Later on, since the short amount of time for each timed run was usually less than 10 seconds, the streamlining effect worked or seemed to work, but, was found to do very little. Streamlining was more for the long distance runs at places like El Mirage or Bonneville. But, we all thought streamlining was the answer to going fast at the drags. As far as lowering the center of gravity and helping with streamlining, there was not a better set up than the front mount blower system. Spring 1959 Summer 1959 The Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton FED was one of the early front mounted race cars in the So Cal area. Their semi-full streamlining body encompassed the front mounted blower. Don Hampton went on to have a successful supercharger shop that is still active, today. https://www.hamptonblowers.com “During the 1950’s, Hampton gained recognition as not only a driver, of such vehicles as his; ’29 Roadster, a Ford flathead, a “rear engine” Buick V-8, a Top Fuel 354-cid Chrysler belonging to Chet Herbert as well as Kenny Lindley’s beautiful Miss Fire dragster, which he drove at the ’59 NHRA Nationals in Detroit, but also as a mechanical engineer, manufacturing blowers “Hampton Blowers” in 1957.” “Partnering with Eldon Dye and Kenny Lindley, throughout the 50’s brought Hampton opportunities to drive award winning vehicles, as well as be on the front lines of mechanical innovation for the early years of drag-racing.” Lindley/Hampton FED with SOUND Jnaki During this time period, the Dragmaster Group from Carlsbad developed their version for the drags. It became one of the more popular chassis and motor combinations for several years. total Dragmaster race cars (including, Cyr and Hopper, Dragmaster, World’s Fastest Chevy powered FED. from a Don Nowell industrial drawing template... Hello, We have always thought of a Potvin style blower set up for the street. But, it just seemed a little over the top. From a Don Nowell drawing, I tried to show what it would look like if one were to have a 10% set back and enough space for the 671 or even a smaller 471 blower. But, it was for competition and here is one of the best and original Potvin style set ups on a early Dragmaster chassis set up... by the Dragmaster Company in Carlsbad, CA. The film was taken in the summer of 1959 and the sound came from the same Dragmaster FED at the U.S. Nationals in September of 1959. Modern editing made it so... Dragmaster sound One of the original front mount Potvin blower systems showed up with the Dragmaster group out of Carlsbad, CA. It was a almost an hour-plus drive to get to Lion’s Dragstrip, but the Dragmaster group was at Lion’s Dragstrip almost every weekend with a variety of race cars. The Potvin blower drive front in center of the famous golden Dragmaster chassis with the SBC motor. Jnaki Much has been said for the development of the Dragmaster chassis, but preliminary ideas were that the Potvin front mounted blowers were part of the streamlining of those early chassis dragsters. At least, the driver did not have to look around the big 671 sticking up right in front of the sightline down the dragstrip. The Potvin/Dragmaster was so enticing that the World’s Fastest Hemi Powered FED race group was now a Potvin powered SBC motor with the title of world’s fastest SBC racer. Cyr and Hopper know/knew their stuff. One big surprise was that the team of Cyr and Hopper went from a big Hemi powered FED that won almost everything possible in drag racing, to a Dragmaster chassis with a Potvin supercharged SBC motor.
