My wife has to go to Chicago from Saturday, June 5th through Monday, June 7th on a business trip, and I've never been so I'm going to go with her. I'll have all day Sunday and Monday to kill, and I was wondering if there were any shops or events going on that weekend that would be worth checking out. Thanks in advance for any help! Curt
Not car related, but... Hit the bongo room for brunch on sunday (9:30 to 2:00) It will be the best food you every had! Its at 1470 N. Milwaukee ave. just south of Damen. But be prepared to wait, 30 to 45 mins. for a table for 2 or you can counter it usaully right away. My favs are the breakfast burrito or red pepper feta bennedict. with thick sliced bacon and you can order 1 pancake for desert.. bannana walnut with pecan sauce or oreo with a vanila sauce. It sits in the heart of wicker park and you can grab a cup of coffee and walk around to the shops while you wait. I would fly back to chicago just to eat there As far as hot rod shops, not alot if any close to the city, Some Mullet (muscle) car shops around but most of the hot rod stuff has long been rusted away. FS
The Roadster Shop in Elgin was pretty neat to go though, He has a frame manufacturing shop and also a shop where they build cars, and a small show room. Heidts and Billet Speacialtys is both up there somewhere but Ive never been to either one of them.
We've got some time to figure it out, but offhand, I can't think of anything going on in the city. Are we talking the city or Chicago in general? Bongo does rule. Nice scenery too.
It depends. There aren't too many rod shops around. The Roadster shop in Elgin, Frame-up in Waukeegan, Midwest Hot Rods (forgot where that is) I can get you addresses and phone numbers if you'd like. The only place I've been to is Frame Up. Nice showroom. Too goldchainish for me, though.
Kingston Mines. One of the best bars I have ever been in. I saw R.L. Burnside play there till 5 in the morning. Chicago rocks. It's 75 degrees here though ... no, that's not true it's raining
Just my guess, but I don't think too many people will be around. That is Billetproof in Detroit. But just in case, Martys in Sycamore is home of the Hunert Car Pileup!
Yep, Billetproof/Detroit might empty out Chicagoland that weekend. Midwest Streetrods in Plainfield, Il. I-55/South from Downtown, travel about 20-25 miles and exit Rte 126, travel about 1-2 miles and it's on your left. They're friendly and you'll get a shop tour. It's a big shop and has many types of cars under construction, plus a storage room filled with cars. Last January, I got a tour from owners son and he was building "Jimmy Shine" RPU. It was very tuff. Hope this helps. Hey, Leadfoot, I promise to call you this week and we'll get together.
[ QUOTE ] We still need to know, city or suburbs, rental car or not? That will make a huge difference. [/ QUOTE ] I'm going to be in the city, but I'll have a rental car so I can pretty much head anywhere. Thanks for the tips so far...keep 'em coming. Also, let me know if there are any good spots...especially concrete parks or ditches...to skate (might be a long shot, but worth checking). Like I said, I know nothing about the city at this point! Thanks. Curt
You've gotta get a cheeseburger at the Billy Goat Tavern and take the wife up to the 95th floor of the John Hancock building for a drink. The view is the best in the city and it's free, and the BEST view from that floor is seen from the ladies room. Make sure your wife pays it a visit.
The billy Goat is waaaaay over rated IMO. The burgers kinda suck. My office is right down the street from the newer one.
If you want to skate, people skate te federal buildings on sunday,(downtown is kinda deserted) plenty curbs, granite benches and rails. Also if you want to impress your wife for dinner, and like really good Italian. Take her to Rosals on on Taylor and Racine (1154 W. Taylor) 312.243.2357. Make reservations the place only sits like 12 people downstairs, do not eat upstairs, same food, not as intimate and the decor is out of a 80's porn film. Order a Karaffe of red, the special fresel and if you like seafood get a order of artichoke and shrimp linguine in alfredo sauce, one order is probably enough for two, follow it off with a cappichino and split a order or home made tiramisu. Dress is semi-casual Jeans and a nice sweater should do it and they have valet parking, I so miss chicago food, my mouth is watering just thinking about it... You know that saying " Bad sex is like bad pizza, there is no bad pizza." Well who ever quoted that obviously hasn't been to LA
There are a few skate parks around, but you'll probably be skating with kids. It's too far in advance to know what's going on musically or car wise, but you're welcome to hang out with us. Maybe you can catch a ride with us to Detroit. It's about 5 hours away. joe
We're not going to be getting there until Saturday early afternoon, so I'll miss Billetproof. It's my luck that it's going on...I think I'm ALWAYS 5 hours away from the cool shit! Hellfish - are any of those parks you mentioned concrete? Bowls/pools/etc? I don't mind skating with kids if the terrain is cool.... If you guys are going to be back in town Sunday let me know. Thanks again. Curt

Curt, to the best of my knowledge, the skate parks are 'crete and only a few years old at most. I don't skate and haven't actaully been to them, but the one I've driven past looks concrete with lots of "hills" and "valleys"( <-demonstrating my complete lack of skater cool). I think they're all covered up now, but when it gets warmer out I can check it out for you and sned pics. It's not too far from me. I think there are several I haven't seen.
