Hot Rods Any good looking new tachs?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by loveoftiki, Aug 23, 2019.

  1. I see what was Sun is gone...I’m wanting a period looking tach for my monster tach, no big shift light, just a cool looking, simple tach. If there’s a gauge cluster to go along with it even better...

I went with VDO for the tach and gauges in my '39 p/u with an 8ba. Everywhere I looked for a tach they were mostly 8,000 rpm or higher which is way over kill for a stock flathead. VDO had a 4 grand tach that looked plain and simple. They also had matching water temp gauges that only went to 220. With my flathead running at 180 or less I didn't need a temp gauge with a high limit of 280. The volt meter which I added later has a white needle while the 2 temp gauges and oil pressure gauges have orange needles but no biggie IMO. gauge 2.jpg gauge 1.jpg

  3. Bosch bought out the rights to Sun and sell the old look gauges. I don’t know much about the price or quality though.

The Bosch Retro Line one looks like the Sun one, without the Sun logo:

When I first read the thread title, I thought you asked for good looking new techs. I apologize, and we can now return to your regular programming.

Summit sells a 6000 rpm Stewart Warner tach but it doesn't come with a cup.

Member has an online design tool that allows users to spec out every aspect, with an extra cost option for custom artwork. I had them build both the speedo and tach to match my existing SW Greenline gauges. I had the speedo built to get a 4.5" diameter gauge instead of the 3 3/8" SW. The current SW Greenline tach has an unusually deep body and I couldn't find a chrome cup that I liked which would accommodate it. The size of the Speedhut tach allowed countless cup options. If you can't find what you want, create it...

I used the Classic Instrument website to design my own tach for the Zipper. Pricey, but worth it.

Nice looking gages, too bad about the digital odometer.

I really like the chrome body of the budget Autogage tach from Orielly's in my buddy's 55 Ford, but we both wish it hade a more traditional face rather than the standard Autometer style face.

I have this cheapo Sun-Pro in my '51. It was less than $20 from Summit and has a "plain" look I like. It is quite accurate as well. I had a larger version and didn't like it, so I substituted a 2 1/16" unit.

Edit : Now that I look at the picture, I think I should paint the knob in the center gold to match the speedometer.

Get an old Sun Tach and have Williamson's Instruments convert the box to work without the batteries. I had the one in my car done about ten years ago, the price was reasonable and it's been 100% trouble free.
