Projects Another question about the charging systen on a buick

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Bruce Fischer, Nov 7, 2013.

  1. Ok so i told you the 56 buick wasnt charging and there is a new voltage regulator in it.I also put another generator in but still she not charging. Now when i got the 56 buick the starter under the pedel was gone .They had installed a system where you turn the key to the on postion and then hit a starter button mounted under the dash. They have it directely wired to the starter and not thru the coil could that be doing any damage or why she not charging? Thanks Bruce.

Should not be related. The starter circuit is separate from the charging circuit.

generator? if so I think the foot exciter latches the starter relay and when rpm is sensed, the gen un latches starter

The Buicks I've worked on 53 and 57 used vacuum to disengage the starter switch when the engine starts.

  5. Ok than I wonder why she isn't charging?Bruce.

Exactly! But it also uses vacuum as a secondary switch for the starter relay.

If someone wired the car like you said, I would seriously get the manual and check the wiring from Generator to starter relay, and any wire that was used for the pedal start. Sounds like something is wrong if you have changed out the gen and reg.

Simple way of checking, start car, put voltmeter on Armature term of gen or reg, then ground F terminal of gen or reg. If it starts to charge, then reg is bad or wiring to it is problem. If still no charge then gen is bad or the wiring is screwed up.

  8. Thanks WILLYS Bruce.
