Dude really wrote that... "Forming criminal gangs, becoming dope addicts, and engaging in sex orgies has become so prevalent in many American cities amongst Hot Rodders." I'm not one to downplay the level of hooliganism in hot rodding history. Never have been... Hell, I celebrate it. But I've done enough research and have met enough of our forefathers to confidently say that by and large, hot rodding was started by good people. So that fucking guy sees things like street racing, traffic citations, mild hooliganism, etc... and straight up makes up some bullshit about gangs, drugs, and sex orgies to stoke the fear and further his agenda.
Sex orgies? Dammit, I knew I left too early. Nah, maybe I did the right thing. As I remember, there was an overwhelming majority of males there.
Possibly, one of the best training manuals, for young potential, future "HOODLUMS" To attain high stature in car clubs, that attract these types! Your results may vary! HELL, everyone's results may vary!
Lloyd in that situation? No one and I mean no one wants to see, be part or even hear about that. Back to the point, the muscle car, disco crowd of the 70s would be more likely to engage in such activities, than hard core hot rodders.
Hey @John B That is an interesting funny post about Lloyd-fest 2023. As a 71 year old that was born in 53, and started high school in 68, and graduated in 71, it appears that you were 15 years old in 1984. Its always interesting to see and hear the perspective about the 70's from a unique individual that, that sadly missed all of that great experience! That's not a dig at you, I appreciate your insight about such matters. Thanks from Dennis, an old school radical left wing tye dye hippie!
Damn it I’m always to early or to late. Don’t forget the hoodlums with loud exhaust, those rotten hoodlums. Dan
“… sermonized that all hot rodders were drug-addled gang members indulging in sex orgies as much as they did in street racing.” Wow, powerful words… how did he know that took place during our teens and 20 something days? Ha! “In hindsight, it’s laughable—a perfect storm of ignorance and fear, manifesting as pure, unadulterated stupidity.” Well said… Hello, Well, my wife and I lived through it all, but we did like going to San Francisco every chance we got. Something drew us to that area. We looked along the coast and a coastal mountain range community in the Mt. Tamalpais area. We found a house and now, it was looking for some source of income. We lived in coastal So Cal, but that S.F. Bay Area just had something that drew us back time and time again. The biggest bay in the USA, plenty of space along the coast, it was just a different feel to being 20 somethings with all the time in the world. Perhaps, we were not as noticeable as a couple driving around in a roadster or sedan delivery. Our El Camino was rather nice for us, but blended in nicely in any area along the coast. The city center attractions drew us for visits, like the aquarium, parks and diners. We would have moved there in a flash, but the one thing that kept us grounded to So Cal was the wide spread group called “the family” including our parents and siblings. Along with other instrumental things that we grew up doing all year around. Enjoying the weather, sunny coastal drives along the beachfront highways and having the time of our lives, surfing, relaxing and mindful of our direction in life. Jnaki So, yes hot rodders usually get “the wrong end of the stick.” And these days, any gathering of street take overs is written as a drag race… how apropos for a non-knowing reporter to write about something they have no clue in covering, other than some flashy headlines. It is not the cool car shows/charity events clubs + individuals are part of and have been for years. But, anything that grabs attention of the public can be labeled as those “drag race fiends…” YRMV Be Nice....
I just could not help posting a pic of the first roadster I ever built in the '60s. It seemed appropriate. That is my religion teacher, a Notre Dame nun riding shotgun. While she was adamant about cautioning me of the evils of sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll, she totally loved the white knuckle ride I gave her. She thought the open exhaust (note the passenger side header was not yet built and I was running with open exhaust ports) was expecially invigorating. WHaaaaat???
Was that car the gateway for your religion teacher to acquire the other vices she was warning you about?
First off I want to thank my arms for always being by my side, and the sidewalks for keeping me off the streets.... oh wait... this thread isn't about me? at least I can always count on my fingers
