Bought a SAE thread gauge , it measures 16 Threads per inch. Rock Valley stated they only manufacture with 12 threads per inch.

  2. 12,16 and 18? Three different pitches for the 1 1/2 size? That seems odd.

The cap needed is Two and a half inches with a thread of 16 Threads per inch, SAE. Sorry for any confusion. It is an aluminum cap with an "O" ring inside.

If you need to get one made see if there are any trade schools near you. Somebody there may need a project to get a grade by the end of the year.

  5. Right, but you said to other people quoted 12 and 18 threads per inch. So one of them has an odd thread size. If yours is SAE then the other choice would be USS. So what would the third one be? Not that it matters as far as your issue is concerned.
    Good luck. :)

That is a thought, as I'm having no luck with machine shops in the area. They claim they don't have the "tooling".

Thanks, the third one would probably be Metric. I am not a machinist, just guessing.

    Lindridge Lane
    Staplehurst
    Kent

    United Kingdom

You'd have to check on international shipping.

They said they could make the cap but to make it worthwile for them and me they would have to make a minimum of 50 caps.

Water will not get the gas fumes out of a tank! You must purge all the oxygen out of the tank. After cleaning just use a argon or Argon/Co2 mix or purge with a Co2 fire extinguisher before you weld. If it's a stainless tank hook a argon hose to the fuel line and back purge it while you weld. I have done a lot of them this way . Can you shorten the neck and retread it to a corse thread? Just trying to be helpful.

Definitely not going to be doing any welding on the tank. The neck could be shortened and possibly re-threaded, but , I have a possible solution on the way that should be here Friday. If the cap works, all will be well. Appreciate the info.

Dry ice dropped into the tank , while welding works wonders . Done it many times welding LPG pipelines , dry ice melts nothing to clean up , and nothing to ignite in tank while vaporing off into C02 gas

I like the dry ice because it keeps the purge going when welding.
