question, i converted my 50 Ford coupe to 12 volt, but have one issue: the alternator has a built in voltage regulator. Should I keep the external reg connected? I also installed a new wiring harness.

No need for an external regulator at all unless it is easier to use it a connection point for some wires that would require you to replace it with a barrier strip to hold the wires.

86 the external,it will work just fine and there will be less under the hood clutter.

I have a Delco 3 wire, internally regulated. In my case, I just use a 12V radio shack diode to prevent feedback and everything is tucked away very cleanly. Definitely don't need the external reg.

Find the factory wiring diagram for the alt and wire it up the same way the factory had it. The alt will never know the difference, and will work great.
