Projects Almost Funny - AWB Barracuda Funny Car Build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by squirrel, Nov 27, 2017.

  1. Had to replace the wire feed roller on my Miller. Found out it's the same as the bearings in my kids roller blades and skateboards. Get 'em on ebay for pennies.

My son is visiting, we got some more work done on the car. A long day.

I cut the floor and firewall pieces, and we mostly made them fit. Still need to build the transmission tunnel. The cage is just tacked together, it is not attached to the frame yet.

I worked on the body quite a bit, made the opening for the firewall so it will attach to the aluminum part that is mounted to the chassis. I also cut and reinforced the cowl, where the rear carb pokes through. We made the outboard part of the wheel tubs, spot welded to the quarter panels. And I did some trimming around the rear window, and added some tube reinforcement along the top edge of the quarter panels. Mostly done now with the major metal work on the body shell, so I can start the finish body work on it.

also tested that the slicks do indeed fit through the trunk opening.

We also worked on the brake pedal design, and throttle linkage ideas, and some other details. There's an incredible amount of planning that needs to be done to build a car mostly from scratch.

Jim, how much more Hp would be gained using mechanical fuel injection over carbs? I could see better driveability with the carbs on the road part of the Drag Week but change over to Injection at the track..

    Drag Week maybe? :)

I'd love to do mechanical injection, but it would take me a while to figure it out. I hadn't considered swapping carbs on and off, it's a neat idea...

Right, have a separate fuel system for carbs and for injection & just cap off either system when not in use.

Probably a dumb idea, but what about riffing on a real barracuda's coloration and markings in a 60s style paint job. Think mid 60s Watson maybe, with some bitchin silver leaf lettering.

That's all I got, thanks for building one of the coolest cars to grace the Hamb.

That's a good view of the car, a chance to see things that don't normally show.

The little hottie on the far right reminds me how much I still like the fashions of the 60's. Not all the hippie stuff, but normal girls looked great.

Hey, did you come up with method to decide what size wheel/tire to use to roll your tubing? Or did you use the guess and check method? I like the looks of it, I might wanna do it myself.

I used the guess method, it worked pretty well. I did something similar on the other car, so i have a little experience now.

I know Jim wants it simple but I can’t stop thinking about this Barracuda paint idea. A dirty pearl white or silver base(hell, the body color Jim got the car in would work)with a deep blue candy fade coming from up above over metal flake, lace or fish scale shadowing on the top flats. Could be done really cool without being cheesy too.
Maybe someday after it has won Drag Week a few times?

  28. Hello Squirrel,

I'm looking for a a clutch type Trac-Lok for an 8.75. Preferably in good condition but will consider one in need of refurbishing.
I also need one for an 8.25 as well but it's not as important as the 8.75.
I don't know if you saw an ad on craigslist 2 weeks ago for genuine Barracuda racer that came with a 1961ish Dodge Power Giant NC transporter ( the one that had the swing out cowling). The bed was angled, of course. That's how the cool guys do it.
The Cuda was a 66 with front wheels and rear axle moved forward. The chassis had not been lengthened and the car had a definite nose high attitude, The seller included action photos from back in the day and it still wore it's racing livery. I don't recall it's name but it was located somewhere in California. When I checked on it last week the ad was gone. I thought it was reasonably priced, not sure but $16,000- $20,000 comes to mind.

I missed that one. Good thing, because I already have one to build!

    I don't have any 8 3/4 stuff. I have a Dana 60 posi I'm not going to use, though.

  30. I have a good set of Doug's tri-y plated headers from a 72 Dodge Tradesman B200 van. I'm willing to deal!:D
