Had some AssHat do exactly that with a picture of MY car!
2 different friends contacted me with links to the ad,
The running joke all week was that my wife placed the ad.
Mr. AssHat took my pic down and put up his own

All it needs is finished up,may not be the most physical part but sometimes it is the most difficult.

If the ads were true, last time I was looking for an OT daily driver everyone in Arkansas had just "freshly rebuilt the engine and transmission" then immediately put the car out for sale for $2000. Who would want to buy a car from someone that stupid? Knowing some people's idea of a rebuild, I'll take my chances with the tired old engine, untouched.

For those of us building airplanes it's known as:
    90% Done (& 90% to Go!)

The advertising says : "needs only to be painted"
    Check out the picture...
Still i bought the car after a couple hours discussion about a reasonable price!!

"All the hard work is done" mostly means: they did anything except hard work!!

I looked at a El Camino today, the guy said the paint was perfect except for two places where the paint was bubbling. I drove for an hour to get there. The two places turned out to be the 'left' side and the 'right' side of the car. When I pointed that out he said, 'I'm sorry'. Yea you got that right.

    I just saw this in an ad on Hemmings;

    ". . . barn fresh, garage kept, . . . "

What the hell does that mean?!

Another 'saying', that means absolutely nothing: "In good condition", read between the lines and you will see, (for the condition it's in)!!! Ha!

  12. Sometimes what's not said is worse that what is. Many sellers do all they can to 'pretty up' their items but neglect to mention the frame's rotten, no brakes, needs glass etc. I get a kick too out of some who say - especially on CL - "phone calls only, I don't answer e-mails". . . and "no pictures". Huh? Why?

And I never EVER could figure out why some won't post a price in their ads. Guess it's either they're embarrassed to do so, or do they expect someone to offer more than they may be asking for it? If they figure it's a waste of time to post the price, I'm not gonna waste mine calling to find that it's priced outside my limits.

  13. I guess the hard work is a matter of perception. I figure the hardest part of an engine for instance is comming up with the combination of parts and fitting. You can teach a monkey to screw one together.

I do agree with where you are comming from. Sometimes all the hard work means that there is a lot to undue before you can even get started building it. Perhaps its the same with an engine, maybe you don't want one that I think is good. ;)

  15. "Restorable Condition" I see this all the time in local newspaper ads. Of course it's in a condition that one could restore it, if you really wanted to. The ad was for a '62 Valiant four door. Why bother?

I've learned photography is the great equalizer of cars and every car, even new ones, needs something. I allow at least $500 beyond the purchase price to get to know it.

I do like "ran when parked" coupled with "it should start right up, but I haven't tried." Like it takes so much effort to turn the ignition key on a car that you're trying to sell to at least see if the thing runs.

This one translates into: "I tired to start it, nothing happened, but I don't know enough about cars to get the f*cking thing running on my own, so you'll have to figure it out."

I saw this one used on 60 chevy 4dr at the Nats in Louisville this week end, my wife read the "Ready For Paint" and said "don't look like it is ready for anything but a tow truck"

  18. I have a ran when parked in my yard. I should have it running soon, but I have a backup motor. :D

I never buy any used that I don't think needs to be gone through and if its in good shape I'm just pleasantly surprised.

I was thinking about it a little bit since my last post. I think all the hard work has been done is a lot like in the real-estate market when they say up and coming neighborhood. it means that maybe someday with enough help and work it could amount to something.

"Up and coming neighborhood" is a good one, there's a lot of that here in New York.

"Built on a 1957 Austin Healey 100 frame while using metal doors from the Austin. This is a nice built kit with a good fit to the frame includes the defrost ducts and frame titled also Have a mustang 11 front end not installed. This car has a lot of potential. 2500.00 to own your dream car. Let's talk"

I had an experience that was just the opposite. I sold a 46 Dodge pick up. I told everyone on the phone it needed to be completely disassembled and everything media blasted since it has heavy surface rust inside and out. I only wanted $200.00 for it. it was a complete truck minus the air cleaner.

many people came and looked, and several commeneted that they didn't think it would be as bad as it was... hello?? "needs to be completely disassembled and blasted inside and out"... what did you think that meant?

I can't believe how many people post ebay ads of a car in a barn, with no pics of the interior or engine, or even good side shots. Half the time there is dirt and crap piled on it, yet they expect to get top dollar. Maybe the bad pics are intentional to hide the flaws.

  28. Knew q guy in high school that wrapped 65 mustang fastback around a tree
"cherry before accident" was his ad

  29. "Ran great until the motor seized!" - when the owner ran it dry of oil!
"Only 280K miles, all highway!" - Sure. All highway. Right. In Houston or Los Angeles, maybe...at 10 miles per hour, seven hours per day, six days a week!
"Just needs a tune-up and some freon!" - So, fix the damn thing and sell it then!
"Cheap fix" - If you are Donald Trump...
"Smokes a little at start-up, then goes away"...Smokes enough to initiate a smog-alert day all by itself. Smoke goes away after the car stalls and won't restart.
"Invested over $20K into this car, must sacrifice at $5K!" - I put way too damn much money into this POS and am looking to push it off onto the next sucker.
"Light rollover, easy fix!" - No such thing. The damn vehicle rolled over, period.
"They're not making any more!" - No shit, Sherlock. 1950 was sixty years ago!

Of course, ANY car or truck over twenty years old is a "Classic"..."This year, this car becomes a Classic!"...wow, really? So, if I go to the AACA list of TRUE "Classics", I'll find your 1990 Guacamolemobile?

I saw an add for a 33 Ford, the guys add says All the parts necessary to build a superior hot rod. Price was not that bad so me and a couple of buddies go 75 miles to look at it.
When we get there the guy has a fiberglass something in a big ball of skid wrap. Can I look at it, No you have to buy it first, I'm sick of people coming here and asking me to unwrap it, Does it have a frame? No but a frame is real easy to make for a car like this, 100 bucks and you will be good. Do you have a title? No but you can buy a title on E yay and tell them that its for this car. Wheres the engine that you showed for this car?, looked like a hemi? Oh thats not for this car, that was just in the picture. Yeah like in the picture as in right in the center of an engine bay on a frame with a body that wasn't in saran wrap. When a car says too good to pass up, guess what?
