Is there an aftermarket pitman arm available for a 68-70 mustang steering box?
I think the shaft size is 1".
I need a pitman arm that has a tapered hole for the steering link.
The original arm has an end like a tie rod.

  2. Give Jim @ Total Performance in CT a call. I'm pretty sure they carry one

The Pete & Jakes one is for the 1-1/8th shaft.
The Total Performance web site also lists only the 1-1/8th arm.

The P&J pitman arm for the Mustang box is $75. Too much. Anyway, it is for the 1-1/8" shaft so I can't use it. I've got a 1965 Mustang box with the 1" shaft.

So I could buy the Speedway cross steering tie rod end with the tapered hole and the tie rod stud (#910-02999) for $40 (saving $35), cut off the stud, and use the original Mustang pitman arm.

Any other cheap solutions from anyone using an original pitman arm?

    (edit for mis-spelling)

This setup was for a friend's car. He ended up shopping on Ebay and getting the correct 1" arm with the tappered hole there. I think it was from an early Mustang.
The arm had a weird offest to it but that may help in getting the crosslink to clear stuff under the car.
We have not installed the new box yet. I may get a chance to look at it on Tuesday 5/12.

What early Mustang used a pitman arm with a tapered hole ? ??
Far as I know they had the tapered stud.
Ask your friend, I'm interested whatever it was.

I'm pretty sure it was listed as a 65-67 6 cyl with PS.
I just looked at Ebay and there are some listed with those specs.

Appropriate pitman arms may also be found on Falcons, Comets, Cougars as well as Mustangs. Later on the same applies, same box, to Mavericks and Comets.

This is correct, however, just like every SBC for sale is a Corvette engine, most interchangeable Ford stuff is marketed as Mustang even if it only fits one year!

This box was made by Saginaw so some/most internal parts are the same as '63-'82 Corvette. ASFAIK the Corvettes all used 1-1/8th arms with tapered holes.
Corvette boxes are more expensive because they came on Corvettes!

There seem to be plenty of "Mustang" available because they came on so many other cars.

Even the supposedly rare HiPo 16:1 style fast box is easy to find because similar ones were installed on lowpo cars:

    Chris-
Thanks for that info. It takes a lot of mystery out of looking for these arms!
The arm my friend got is the manual arm for early Mustangs with manual steering.
It is the one with two holes for the link.

  15. A new car of mine has a early mustang box with a 1 inch sector. I have the same question as the OP. Is there an aftermarket pitman arm available for the 1 inch sector? All I can find is the 1 1/8

It's a tapered spline with 4 male master splines and 32 regular splines on the sector. I found a pitman arm for a 525 /605 box but the master splines were male on the pitman arm. Crazy stuff

  16. I don't know if they still offer it, but as one poster mentioned, Pete and Jakes used to have them because I bought one for my early Mustang steering years ago. They made two sizes. A call on the phone to them might be worth while. If they no longer make one, they may know where one might be had.

    I have a new P & J 1" Mustang pitman arm for sale, part # 1021. If interested, PM me. :)

  18. Searched their site. 1021 doesn't come up. I bought a mustang arm from a mustang shop today. If it doesn't work I'll be in touch! Won't be home for a while.

Don't know if this would help you but on corvair boxes like we use on t-buckets , we just file the master splines flat so the the pitman arm can be positioned as needed.
