    Hello Folks,

I'm in the process of changing floor shifters in my 56 Chevy, and I'm considering a Lokar cable-control unit. I like to bang the gears on the Turbo 400 every now and then and I am wondering if that's possible with the Lokar. I know it's not a ratchet shifter, but I was hoping there was some sort of positive stop (detent?) from first to second, and then second to drive, that would keep me from pushing the lever, say, from first all the way to drive.

Can anybody with experience with these shifters provide this info?

    Thanks in advance.

There are stops, but that’s not what they’re intended for...

The turbo 400 I had, put it in drive, mat it, and it'd bang gears better'n I could dream of.

Never thought I'd read bang'n gears and Lokar shifter in the same sentence!

  6. Get yerself a Gennie shifter. I think it'll hold up better for that. Mine has for me.

I have a turbo 400 and a Lokar shifter and this is the last combo you want for bangin gears.

And never, ever, EVER trust the neutral safety switch in one. Talk about banging gears...

Not with my lokar, looks good but does not locate the gears well.
Hurst quarter stick in my OT ride bangs the gears with a pg and manual valve body.

I'm sure you were serious but it is funny.

  14. How do you bang gears in an automatic? I have an OT vehicle that will pull the front tires but has a 3500 RPM stall convertor, reworked internals, and manual valve body and can't bang gears like my OT manual 6 Speed car.

Jesus H Christ, y'all know what I mean...manual shifting of the gears.

THIS would be my first choice, if they still made them.

We weren't sure if YOU knew what you meant. And just to make sure........

........."banging gears" and "automatic transmissions" are mutually exclusive.

With a manual, you'd be bangin' synchros, right? not gears?

With a slushbox, you're bangin' clutches.

Anyways, no, a street rod shifter is not a racing shifter. Get a racing shifter if you want to do the racing thing.

what shifter did you have before the change?

    Banging gears with a 400TH doesn't compute.

if I still had my high school GTO I'd take you for a ride and show you what banging gears is. actually pulled the T handle off the shift lever one time going into second gear, grabbed the stub and went for 3rd. :)

    Wow, tough crowd...:D

B&M Hammer Shifter, and I'm definitely not a fan. It's a fricken rattle trap. Are all ratchet shifters this bad?
Then again I've only had the car a couple of months, and its my first auto trans floor shifter. Just looking for something that would allow for 'spirited' driving. In the past I've driven buddies' cars that had Hurst Dual-Gates and AutoStick 1, loved those, but can't find'em anymore.

Had a Lokar on my '57 F100, it as "mushy" at best. Detents in tranny were more precise than shifter was. Had a B&M Star Shifter in an OT car years ago. That thing you can hit as hard as you want and it just goes one gear at a time. Very positive on the stops. Full ratchet shifter or common shifter in the same unit. Would do another if the car was right.

The responses here pretty much echo everything else I've heard about the Lokar, so that's out.
Since they seem to be the only other alternative I am looking again at other ratchet shifters, specifically the B&M Quicksilver and the Hurst Pro-Matic 2. I've seen the Quicksilver in another ride, looks OK but I've never driven one. I like the Hurst because... it looks like a Hurst, never seen one in person.

This would be so much easier if they still made the AutoStick.
