careful engineering. There is also a car in Australia with a custom built engine using 2 huge cylinder assemblies from a radial engine.

  3. The type of rods used on radials varies, depends upon the manufacturer.

Pulling a radial through by hand before starting is USUALLY a good idea. We always did with the W670, R985 and R1340 engines, but discovered that it wasn't necessarily a good idea on the R3350's. For those engines if the clutch on the starter is properly set-up it will slip before you bend a rod. And you don't want to "bump" the starter over either, that'll take out some bearings in the gear train... I've seen the results of that. We were pulling the engine for a repair after finding silver in the screens when a couple of "old" Navy AD-4 pilots walked into the hangar. When informed of the type of metal we had found the first thing out of their mouths was "Pilot's been bumping the starter hasn't he". They also told us which bearings were failing. Surprised us but it was confirmed by the engine shop upon tear-down.

I've also had to pull a 1340 and 3350 after hydraulic locks... not a pretty sight inside and costs a lot of money. The 3350 failure was massive and the whole engine had to be scrapped, very few parts were savable.

And be very careful with the inverted Rangers. If you feel any resistance other than compression when pulling one of those through it's time to pull a plug in each cylinder.

Last thing... Merlins and Allisons also have the fork and blade rods like the Hisso in the pictures.

ok gents... here's a video of the Kop Hill Hillclimb...put out by Ivan Dutton. Ivan is Tim Dutton's dad. Ivan does some prettu incredible things with caes. Tim is a Bugatti specialist. Anyways...we were talking engines built from radial engine parts and pieces. starting about 9 minutes in is a custom creation using 2 cylinders from an aircraft engine.

Thanks for posting. I’ve seen his stuff before, but didn’t know the details of this particular engine. I love how he just casually mentions that he built the carb himself, and made a mould and cast the crank case. Lol! Genius level stuff right there. I recognize the older guy he’s speaking to, and used to watch his YT vids, but can’t recall his channel’s name. Do you know as I would like to catch up on his latest vids?

Bob, would that be the Tim Dutton, actor from the 1923 series?

@Ziggster That's Ivan Dutton he's talking to. His channel is Shed Racing. Not sure about the caps or spacing but if you put in both should find it no trouble. Or were you referring to Allen Millyard? His channel goes by his name.

I just want to let you know we ALL do stuff like that once in awhile and that you're ok. Apologies not required.

    Thank you, Rolf!
There is some more details on this film (moving pictures):

Nicola Romeo is co-founder of great Italian company Alfa-Romeo!
    --- ---
And a couple more films with aero-engine automobiles!
Tiger-Moth engine in upside-down position - opposite to used in aeroplanes:

… this one is with a compilation of aero-engine automobiles:

    Enjoy, ciao, Zoran

Zoran, you have made my day. Thanks for posting this. As to the cyclops only a Brit would use an axe handle to start a car AND use a canvas back pack for a trunk. I love them all!! Thank you!!

Thanks Bob, WHEN you come to Hershey make sure you have an extra day or so for us to go to the Curtiss Museum in NY.

I've driven by it but have not been there. Big decision is when? I've been to Curtiss 2 times and that's not enough.

    Hello, Rolf!
It would be nice of you to inform us, from the first hand, what are impressions and experience with driving your magnificent FN-Curtiss aero-engined automobile.
    Regards, Zoran

Alan Millyard is off topic but, if you haven't already, check out his many two wheeled creations - an engineering masterclass.
