I NEED A LITTLE HELP-ANYONE IN VEGAS WITH A PLACE I CAN STORE A FEW THINGS FOR TWO DAYS?

I will be vending at Viva Las Vegas Friday/Saturday this weekend and need a secure spot to store a small pile of stuff I've collected on my travels. I would need to unload in Friday afternoon/evening, then load back up either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

    Thanks for the help.

so, did you order some exotic hide for your coupe from Stidham?

  3. Thought I was the only one that caught that. Figured John might be trying to tip it over...

Nope; just stopped in to see what they were about.

  5. Hey John - We chatted about your coupe build when we spoke at GNRS. Looks like it's coming along nicely. Good choice on the Nailhead too. As always, I'm digging your road trip pics and dialogue.

Thanks for the great road trip. There is a road-less-traveled way to cut across NM and Arizona that you may enjoy. Turn off interstate at Deming, NM to Silver City, an interesting older artsy mining town. Northward to Alpine, AZ through the forests to Payson, Camp Verde, Jerome, (Prescott), Ash Fork, Kingman, over Hoover Dam, and into Vegas. Enjoy. If you need any side-trips or alternate routes along the way, let me know.

Good timing on your reply; I was in las cruces when I read it and was thinking about another route but I'm going with your recommendation.

Hope you all enjoy that route as much as we have. Look for the Red As on the sidewalks and windows of galleries in Silver City, NM. If you get very adventuresome, find the town of Mogollon, between Silver City and Alpine, AZ.
Correction on previous list: Ash Fork is where you get back on the Interstate to go west towards Kingman, AZ. There will be an exit for Seligman, if you feel the need for Route 66.

So many stories to tell and so little time to tell them. I stopped in Deming NM last night at the recommendation of rfraze here on the HAMB so I can take "the road less traveled" up thru Silver City.

Had a little issue with my carb last night and thought I might get a shop to look at it today in Deming before heading up in the hills. I have a buddy in Van Horn tx that runs big rigs for the US postal service and I remembered him saying that their trucks get service in Deming so a few calls were made and I found my way the their shop.

The guys were so helpful. They dropped what they were doing and helped me out. It turns out that my suspicions were right; the edelbrock carb is tuned at sea level and I'm running around at 4000+ elevation so I'm running rich. This combined with the van being loaded so heavy was causing it to bog downwhen under load (felt like flooding the carb). I'm putting a larger air cleaner in and All is good.

On the way to their shop I passed these fantastic old hangers. This was a training base used for WWII bombardier training and are now used by a crop dusting outfit. Check it out.

If you are ever thru Deming and want some great home cooking stop by the SUNRISE CAFE. About three years ago while traveling back from LSRU with Holly and Aaron (owners of the Ventura Nationals car show) we happened upon this place and it was so good I had to hunt it down again for breakfast. Best damn green chile omlet and the kind of place where you don't have to ask for your hash browns crispy; they just know.

What an incredible day! So many sights and interesting people. Here are a few photos while I wait for my green chile combo plate. Still need to drive about 140 miles tonight.

This was a pack of javelinas by the side of the road. I snuck up on them and got a few shots before they scrambled up the hill. Them things is ugly.

I knew that so I had my side arm ready. I got within about 75 feet and let the camera zoom do the rest.

One of the cool excerpts from today:

I set out to drive up and over the mountains from Deming NM to Flagstaff AZ. I had not driven most of this route and didn't know what to expect. First was the town of Hurly NM where I happened upon the Hurley general store. They had hundreds of pounds of Hatch chilies drying and home made cherry and apple tarts. Yes I got one of each.

Next I stopped near the town of Reserve NM at the Adobe cafe and bakery. They were not actually open and I could see thru the window that a bunch of people were cleaning the place up. I was looking through the glass when the owner Jennifer Swenson saw the van and motions me to come in.

Upon entering I was knocked over by the smell of fresh baked bread and coffee. Oh my god; heaven! I bought a loaf when I found out they had fresh butter. I ate bread all afternoon.

    Continued......

Jennifer told me how her dad was a total car nut and they always had a bunch of old cars and trucks when she was growing up. She went on to tell me the sad story of her father dying from brain cancer only a short time after being diagnosed. He left her a whole bunch of stuff that they are trying to sell off. She asked if I'd like to look and YES I DID! She was too busy to go with me so she tossed the keys to me and pointed out back to a huge fenced area.

    This is what I saw....

John, in post 200 just after the gateway lodge there is a cool old arched relic of a building.
Above the arch it is hard to read but appears to say Kent public school.
You have a great eye for capturing subject matter. Thanks for not passing this one by. An interesting piece of history many would simply overlook on their way through town.
Lots of stories if those walls could talk.
    Thanks again

Are you about ready for another COE project?
I know for a fact that your crew cab Ford and trailer will definitely haul a load :)

  29. Beautiful, John. I BELIEVE the Kent School building is where I saw my first rattlesnake, over sixty years ago.

Did you by chance get contact info for the Adobe? I know someone looking for a COE.
And where are the pics of the IH 1600 and 1700?

This is my favorite thread a t the moment. Will be a sad day when you arrive home.

We discovered the old Kent school by accident 10 years ago on our drive to the Roundup. We had set out early while it was cold and were layered up with jackets. I was driving my '36 cabriolet and when the sun came up it was coming in thru the windshield making me sweat. With no way to unlayer at speed, I raced ahead and got off the next exit. There it was , the old abandoned school.

I stop every year. It's sad to see the tagging and abuse it's getting. Someone began breaking up the front entry arch since last year. What is wrong with people?
