A follow up to my opening ramble.

Many years ago before Cynthia and I had kids we would do road trips and explore places we had not been. We used to throw our camping gear (I mean KAMPING Gear) in the truck on a Friday after work and just go find someplace to hike, fish and camp. We were pretty adventurous. We skydived for many years, tried hang gliding and were usually up for most anything.

Then we had kids and, well, I guess it's the same story for a lot of us, we stopped doing some things because we needed to other things while we got to the business of raising kids. We put our heads down, leaned into the challenges and "poof" 20 something years passed by. Now I don't want to sound like we had kids and stopped doing everything, not at all, but many of the things we did were around raising the kids and running the business.

I realized today that this trip is a throw back to the early days when we would just jump in and go. I guess I kinda forgot what a good traveling partner Acme Gal is. We are having a blast!

The Plainsman sign should fit in the Acme van on the return trip after you sell all your T's ;)

Windmills…there is just something about them that makes us stop and take a photo. We want one someday. This one was out in the middle of what seemed like nowhere Arizona and pumped water to a holding tank that likely was used to water cattle.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1396317942.994379.jpg

A few mile later in Pie Town New Mexico after having a slice of apple, pinion nut and green chile pie (So Damn Good) we happened upon the Dan Lee well drilling service and windmill museum. Dan came out to greet us and showed us around. He had some cool old junk for sale and of course we were obligated to buy some of it.

Next as we drove east is the VLA (very large array). These things are spooky. They say they look into the heavens and study astronomy with them but I prefer to take a more suspicious view; I think this is how we communicate with the aliens :).

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1396318008.598391.jpg

Next is the town of Magdalena NM. This town is always a good stop with nice people and seems like we always come away with a new story. We stopped in to see ZW, the local Blacksmith, Fire chief, Head of the library, etc. He is a very nice guy and finally sold me the DoAll bandsaw salesman sample that I have wanted since the first imd thru town (photos later).

We stopped in Carrizozo for the night, well actually we didn't plan on staying but while getting gas we were approached by a guy named Rick asking us about the van. He owns the motorcycle shop in town and is the local gear head and while talking about the van he mentioned that he is building a Studebaker truck. What!? So are we! We followed him to his shop and had a blast looking at all of his stuff but the only photo I have on my phone is this one of Mrs. ACME goofing off (again). After saying goodby We thought we were heading back to the highway but kept finding one cool old building after another and ended up meeting another guy named mark (a NYC transplant) that told us we should stay in town and not drive on in the dark because we would miss the best part of NM. So we stayed and are heading out to see some local stuff this morning before continuing east.

  13. Sorry to bring you this sad news while you're vacationing!

    Doughboy Obituary

[IMG]It is with the saddest heart that I must pass on the following news:
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community.
The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and complications from repeated pokes in the belly.
    He was 71.
Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin.
Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess
    Twinkies and Captain Crunch.
The grave site was piled high with flours.
Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded.
Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes.
Despite being a little flaky at times, he still, as a crusty old man, was considered a roll model for millions.
Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough; two children John Dough and Jane Dough; plus they had one in the oven.
He is also survived by his elderly father Pop Tart.
The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

    Sorry... I couldn't resist! Hahaha!!!!

    I Enjoy following your trip!

Long day today. Not that we drove a whole lot of miles but we stopped and saw so many things.

First we drove up to White Oak Nm on a recommendation from a random guy we met.

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1396406481.852866.jpg

When we got there we met Dan who is restoring this old building.

This is Dan's shop. He stays here when he's up on the hill working on the old building.

  15. Where's the rest of that B-Model Mack? Was raised up around Mack coal trucks and wreckers and absolutely love them. Love the pictures and now I want to take a trip through this part of the country!

Next we went to Lincoln Nm. This whole town is a state historical monument. Many of the buildings are preserved as they were in the late 1800's. lots of history including some about billy the kid.

I was driving along telling my wife that we need a caboose for our ranch in Oregon so we could fix it up as a spare living quarters. She shot this idea down as if I had just yelled "pull" at the trap range. Not 10 minutes later we pulled into Big Spring Texas for a coffee break and lookie here.......
