I have too many projects, but want to try to get this together. I have a stock model a frame that will get a z in the back next week.Wow

I have the top loader trans, f1 cross member, f1 pedals, 40 drums , backing plates, and the spindles. I also have a hurst m/m cradle for the ft. I have one of the 4 '' dropped axles like summit is selling.

Now for the work to start.1st I have to learn how to transfer pics from my note 3 to here. That's the biggest job.

    Thanks for any input.

  2. Is the '55 engine a six? Will you squeeze it in by lengthening the frame? Or recessing the firewall?
    Got a trans adapter?

To a restorer, that engine might be worth enough to fund building the rest of the car, with another engine, if it is not messed up.

  4. Below the reply box there is a button next to the "post reply" that says "upload a file." Hit that and choose a picture from wherever you keep your pictures. Then click the "post all images as full size." Then just "post reply" as normal.

  5. So whose flathead is that??

Try a '35, '36 hollow drive shaft it tapers at both ends... one driveshaft makes a pair of headers...
they made cool [lowd] headers when limefires were just off the drawing board...

  7. Take the time and box that frame. You'll be glad you did....

I like to set the boxing plates in about 3/8" , that leaves a lip that can be drilled from below to add whatever you need... brake lines, tranny coolant lines, wiring etc.

that's a good idea. I have read of that. I'm hoping to replicate what a youngster might have done in the mid 50s. That's when I was around hot rodding.

  12. Most folks will tell you to hang a flathead from the side with the exhaust port bolts. There are adapters for this.

Other folks will tell you they have had no problems hanging from the bell.
I have one on a stand right now hung from the side on an adapter that I made.

Please Please support engine from sides the bolt hole strength is not there to risk possible un repairable damage take it from someone that had to spend a lot of time looking for parts due to just such a failure

  14. I don't have a lot of flathead stuff really. What are you looking for in particular?

If you have the flathead on a stand with the pan off and you are changing the cam and lifters do you think it might be a good idea to ridge ream the block and put rings and bearings in it? Or at least have a good look at the ones you have.Likely might want to lap the valves and check the springs too? Not trying to be a smart ass,I have just found it a lot easier to do what you can to make sure the engine will be ok before you put it in the car.

When I get the adapter this w/e I will turn the eng over and look at the bearings. .The tops of the pistons are not oiley so I'm thinking rings may be ok . If I change the cam I will be doing new springs. As this is the first f/h I have done as a adult I'm just looking at all aspects.
Still need a bunch of small parts.
All good suggestions. I don't get much more than 30 40 min outside as I am my wifes care giver. She has early dementia.

Well some more parts gathering. The ft is installed minus the brake parts, have located a 39 r/e with 3.54 gears. Picking that up this w/e. Wife has dementia so that's why there is some long pauses between post. Will try and get some pics by Thanksgiving. Hope it 's a roller by then.

Not going to be a roller by Thanksgiving, but oh so close. My air compressor burned a motor so I can't paint. I have the rear spring ready to paint as well as the r/e. Backing plates will be blasted this w/e . Should have the r/e under it by the 2nd week in Dec.
    Happy Thanks Giving to all.

Boy I wish I had 1 800 dial a friend. Just finished putting my rear spring together with the teflon insert. 15 min job took almost a hour. I'm just too clumsy. Now to fab some spring clamps.
Brakes are together, r/e ready to be painted. Hopefully this afternoon.

Fordnut, I noticed you are running Dave Havlir's spring mounts on a '40 rear end using a stock Model A spring. Are you aware of the rear end widths being different from Model A to the later rears? My guess is you would have to stretch your spring about an extra 2.5" to mount it where those new brackets will live. I don't know if that is do-able, maybe someone else can chime in. Here is a chart from Hot Rod Works on the different rear end widths.

Rear Axle Assembly drum to drum width:

Year Width Spring mount eye to eye
    1928-1931 57.0″ 49.5″
    1932-1934 57.75″ 47.5″
    1935-1936 59.5″ 48.25″
    1937-1941 59.5″ 48.5″
    1942-1948 61.0″

Thanks for the info. Just one of the steps that I will have to get to. Painting the torque tube and r/e today and this w/e. Now trying to find some one to turn my rear drums closer than 125 miles one way.
