Projects A Nice Stocker Gets The Axe- Chopping a 31 Desoto Coupe

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by jalopykid, Nov 12, 2013.

  1. Looks good! I'm working on a 30' Chrysler 3 window that's very similar to your Desoto except mine has the 2 cowl vents on top of the cowl. I also took 3 inches out of the roof, 3" out of the back window and 4" out of the doors. As you mentioned the door glass height looked out of proportion with the rest of it so I took another 1" out, looks way better! Mine didn't have a whole lot of wood in it, whatever wood I had I replaced with metal.I also removed the drip channel above the doors and bent up my own molding with a drip edge. Almost looks like a factory molding. Nice project!

I was one of those who was thinking don't cut up that nice a car. Looks good, glad to see you didn't over chop it. Will be interesting with the hopped up 6, I did a hopped up banger in my Model A pickup and like the older engines.

Great work. Really nice. I'm so glad you took the extra time on the rear window proportions. When Pedro posted the pictures of this gem as a stocker, I have to admit I thought it'd be a shame to see it chopped, but now I am convinced it has received the perfect profile.

  10. Chop looks great. Perfect proportions, even on an otherwise close to stock car.

Hey, jalopykid, your bodyman did a fantastic job on the chop. That car will be classier than it was stock. Beautiful lines. What, no 330, 341, or 345 ?

You did the right thing, it needed it! Very nice work.

  20. I'd like to see a '32 Desoto shell on it too! Anyone have one?

FYI ~ The car is getting a 230" Mopar L-head six with and EDGY F-head (one of four in existence). Tranny will be a 50s era Mopar with overdrive. Wheels will remain 19" and car will be lowered about 3" or as much as Sid can drop the axle. The goal was to have a mostly stock looking car with modern drivability. Since early Mopars already have hydraulic brakes, it's easy to do. I'm sure the F-head will have adequate power (150+ HP), but I have a McCulloch supercharger on the shelf... just in case.

A huge thanks to Brandon for the extraordinary job on the chop!

When I saw the photo shop chop it looked very wrong in proportions and I though toooo much. But the real car looks awesome , you really nailed it. Subscribed for sure.

  25. It's all been said on this thread already, but
    perfect proportions and nice workmanship!

  26. Please keep us updated as the car progresses. Really cool to see a non-ford built in this way.

I've been following this via Facebook and I'm thrilled to see a thread on the HAMB. I think this is a GREAT plan and just the right way to do up an older resto.

I can't wait to see it progress.
