Technical A fix for the Lokar rattle???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Jun 19, 2020.

  1. Anyone have a fix?

The damn thing buzzes unless you put a hand on the knob. I’ve tried every logical idea except machining the hole bigger. Tried o rings that make no difference or jamb it up.
I’ll toss the whole Thing for a better shifter but which one?

Turn this knob clockwise until the buzz goes away.

Try attaching a weight to it somewhere, to alter its natural frequency?

Well it’s in here to get quieter.
Exhaust is too loud his wife can’t stand it. He loves it but only in small doses.

It’s 24” long and the detent button rattles. it’s somewhere between really quite annoying and infinitely infuriating. Lokar should recall all of them bastards.

If you think its the inner cable buzzing, maybe it can be covered in wire heat shrink to insulate it. Not sure if you would have to then lube the cable to keep it sliding freely. Btw...heat shrink is my answer for everything:D

Try sticking a large nut on top of the button with tack putty or something, and see if the frequency shifts. Can you get to the spring under the button?

  9. Back when i sold them I had a few rattle like that. It usually has to do with the length of the cable and housing inside them being off a smidge. redoing the length cures it

Mine does the same thing, Lokar suggested adding thick grease so the cable so it would stick to the housing, it helped for a short time. I bought a shorter lever, it also helped but didn't cure it. I would recommend only using floor mount and not transmission mounted. I have adjusted the knob position, the trans mount, and played with all the mounting bolts, nothing seems to help other then hanging on to it. Might try a bungie cord !

The grease will work for a year or two. Only thing is when you first put it in, it will squeeze out when you push the button until it finds equilibrium.

I avoided the Lokar’s rattle and push button by going with a gated Gennie shifter.

    I really like it.

I have Lokar don't hear anything. You have a real quiet car if you can hear a rattle like that. lol

  20. Earlier I said it was in to get hushed up. Started With the meter 3’ away from the exhaust tip it was 95 decibels at idle, 126 on a healthy throttle blip. We got it down to 82 DB and 106 on the blip.
Test drive meter in cab @ easy 50mph cruise was 70 DB ish and downshift WOT 1-2, 2-3 was about 95 DB peak. That fucking shifter rattled way over that sound level unless you’re holding it.

Just for grins, my buddy was over and fired his circle track car and since I had the meter..,
4’ long 3” straight pipe headers. 97 at idle and 126 on his throttle blip.

A reduction of 13 db is a huge reduction, good job!

I had the same problem in my 32 with a 2004r transmission. I removed it from the transmission and bolted it to the floor and the noise was gone.

  27. Seems to me virtually every OEM has made floor shifters that don't rattle and 'back in the day' that's what you would have used...

Consarned new fangled 1-800-Hot-Rods stuff... what'ya expect?.... LOLOL...

  28. He wanted “ Denali quiet”, what we got is not that but it certainly is a lot quieter. There’s just not enough room for “Denali water tank sized mufflers”
It had flowmaster series 80 2-1/2”. That muffler is built like C5 Vette with inlet outlet same end. (Only ones Like that that don’t cost $1000) Put a pair of 24” thrush glass packs in front of those flow masters . Better but not enough,,,, gutted a couple Harley mufflers and stuffed the baffles into the tailpipes then put the tips back on.

Weird. Mine was 24”, since shortened to 16”. Trans mount. Never rattled. Car makes plenty of other noises, but I’d have noticed.

I went from 24” to 16” because the knob was right next to the steering wheel and would rap my knuckles going down the road. You get plenty of engine vibration 24” up from the trans.

I happened to be under my dash tonight, so I wiggled the shifter around. It doesn’t rattle at all. What part of yours is rattling? The only moving part is the button, which seems pretty tight on mine.
