Here's a few pictures from August 5, 2007 vintage racing event at Connecticut's Waterford Speedbowl: Tant/Mitchell 1937 Chevy another 37 Chevy...note rear bumper made from Ford axle Our 1937 Chevy...a bit out of place, but a dirt car works okay on pavement too! Damn, I was wondering what was going on when I saw some trailers on 395 this afternoon with vintage racers on them. Did they advertise this? I didn't see anything. I woulda gone.
Saturday night was a "static display" of the vintage cars during the regular races, Sunday afternoon was track time for Stock Cars and Midgets/Sprints. There were about 50-60 Stock cars and 20 or so Midgets & Sprints on hand Sunday. I don't know how well they publicized the event...there's another similar event coming up at Thompson Speedway on Saturday August 25.
Here's some video shot from the "bumper cam" of our coupe: <embed src="http://p.webshots.com/flash/smallplayer.swf?videoFile=http://videoserve.webshots.com/video/14266/3059156050090944223BYXTii_v_0.flv&audio=on&displayImagePreview=http://videothumb27.webshots.com/thumb/14266/3059156050090944223BYXTiistill_002_0.jpg&videoPageUrl=http://good-times.webshots.com/video/3059156050090944223BYXTii&autoPlay=false&shareLink=http://cards.webshots.com/ecard/personalize?photoId=3059156050090944223%26source=v" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350" quality="best" allowscriptaccess="always"></embed><br/><br/>waterford07a.wmv
Back in the 70's my daily driver was a 39 standard coupe that had been put back on the road after being raced on the dirt... And my roadsters' body was on a dirt track roadster which was raced right up to the mid sixties in outback Australia. Both were best decribed as being a little rough.
Cool pics. My Dad raced/crewed there in the late 50s early 60s. My model A body was slated to become a car for that track, but didn't happen.
looks like a fun time.. I like how most of the cars were on open trailers.. It looks to cool to see a vintage car in the open..
Open trailers were the BEST advertising that race tracks used to get. Today's more common enclosed trailers don't do much to get people excited about seeing the races when one passes by.
Looks like a good time wish I would have known it was going on. I am going to get more info on the Thompson one.
Damit man I was supposed to be there but had to work over in Sag Harbour till late . I saw a few of the trailers on 95 this afternoon. What a cool thing to see amungst the mommy mobiles! Thanks for the great pics.
This car is nicer than most show cars. It sounds good too. Saw it a couple years back at Waterford when I brought Pop's 36 down for the event. Ray
That #63 blew by my big-block Chevy powered, 70's style dirt modified coupe pretty easily. He's running a full dress flathead and more-or-less stock Ford suspension. There is a matching sedan too, but it wasn't racing that day.
I owned that #38 Midget about 15 years ago before Ken restored it. Real nice complete mid 1930's built car that may have had a Star or Willys 4Banger in it originally. Very nicely built with Model T Ford axles, hubs and 26-27 brake drum built wheels.
Thanks for this thread john56h, you brought back some real fond memories of when my father used to take me to waterford when I was a kid in the early 60's...Bugs Stevens, Fuzzy Bear, Don Collins...I wish I could remember more names because those were the days for me. In the mid 70's I crewed for John Potter who ran a low budget modified vega at Waterford. We didn't do to well in between the wrecks we had almost every week, but we had a great time!
That # 151 was what the ones I remember racing here in Freeport Il back in the 60s looked like. Those are the cars that got me hooked on the 30s body style cars. Spent many Sunday evenings watching them race when I was a young pup. Gene
#151 was driven by Chick Stockwell...Danbury Racearena's winningest driver. Here's a link to many more pictures of Chick's cars through the years: http://www.danbury-racearena.com/C.Stockwell.htm
