History A blast from the past.....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by themoose, Feb 23, 2018.

  1. I was shooting the bull with a couple of old friends about some of the cars we had either owned of built in the past and if we knew what had ever happened to them after they were sold. Turns out that they are pretty much lost in the fog of history except for one which happened to be one of my very first builds back in the early 60's It was a 39 Chevy coupe that I started building in my early teens and progress was slow due to lack of funds that came to me sparingly working on the local dairy farms in the area. I finally did finished the project and it turned out to be a pretty nice little car with a 241 Dodge hemi bored and balanced with a Crower cam and 4 97's on a Weiand manifold . It was a fun car to own and drive but being young when something else caught my eye I and I needed the money I parted ways with it selling it to my cousin. He kept it for a number of years and sold it and I had no idea where it went from there. As providence while at a car show in the summer I noticed a pretty beat up 39 Chevy coupe and still having a soft spot for them i decided to give a closer look. When I looked at the dash my jaw dropped. I had modified my dash and eliminated the glove compartment door and mounted a radio in it and had made a couple of other mods that couldn't be mistaken . On closer examination I found that it had fiberglass front fenders which mine also had. No question that this was the old girl. The owner it turns out bought it from my Cousin painted it yellow and drove and raced the hell out of it until the old Hemi said no more and it then sat for a number of years before getting some new life breathed into it with a built big block Chevy and a complete chassis overhaul. He said that he decided to leave the body as is for old time sake. I was wonder if there are any other stories out there about someone finding their long lost car.

Here are a couple of before and after...It was originally maroon when I built it...

Cool - had a '41 Chevy sedan that was a basic reliable Hot Rod - has never traveled far from my circle of friends - now the Brother of a good friend of mine owns it - usually like it when they go far enough away so as not to end up back at my door step - of course, there some that I wish I still owned

I love the side shot of your car. If that isn't 60's, nothing is. Kool story, too.

Mine is a bit different. I had a red '69 Corvette roadster with a 350 horse 350 and a four speed.
I won't go into details but the time came that it went up for sale. A fellow comes over to look at
it, I toss him the keys and he and his wife take the test drive. There was no negotiating, he went
with my asking price. Car sold, that was that. Oh, before he left he gave me a business card and
said he dealt in GTO parts if I was ever interested. Turns out a kid in the 'hood picked up a very
nice '66 Tempest that he wanted to add a few GTO touches to. So I call this fellow, let's call him
Bob. Bob's wife answers and after asking for Bob, she asked my name. "This is Mitch. You know,
the guy that Bob bought your Corvette from." She says "Bob never bought me a Corvette. What's
your name again?" I immediately hung up and never heard from Bob.

When I tried to run a search on my VIN I couldn't come up with my car. I went to a local Corvette
specialist and they told me that they deal with a private eye to track down cars. I never followed up.

I liked your version better and I as a teen saw one similar in grey primer that had a wee bit more nose up attitude...I do have a soft spot for 39 Chevy Coupes...they look great with a racing theme. The one I describe still is a vision I will always remember as a influencing my like of Vintage Hotrod.

Neat story Moose. Like bumping into your old High School girlfriend.
Tell us you're going to buy the car back and rebuild/restore it to your 1960's version!
