April 28 is the date scheduled to have an auction on 150 cars from the 40s, 50s and 60s in southwest Missouri. Evidently a fellow from northwest Ark bought them from the estate of a man he knew, who was the victim of a shooting. And, there are even more cars back in the woods......this is just the first group of them. They are displayed in a field at the southeast corner of U S Hwy 71 and MO Hwy 90 at the north edge of Jane, MO. There's a stop light at that corner......just turn E onto 90 and there are a couple places to park. I spoke to the owner last night.....who said people are welcome to park up by the road and walk over to look at the cars. At the time I stopped there this afternoon, there were around 40 cars in place. The flatbed rollback guy is working full time bringing them in from wherever they are located. I took pictures of about all of them today.......am including this link to my PhotoBucket album for your viewing pleasure. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v96/BobT3/Cars For Sale/Cars at Hwy 71 - 90 Mar 2012/ Some don't appear to have that much rust, some interiors are better than others.....most are fairly run down. So......enjoy the pics - if nothing else. Will check back there in a couple days to see what else is new.
Sorry.....I did not get a phone number. Maybe can find out one later. There will be some advertising for the sale, but don't know who is going to be the auctioneer. Might be a phone # at that time. I also probably should mention......Jane, MO is a wide spot in the road, about 5 miles N of the Mo/Ark state line on US 71....about 40 miles S of Joplin, and north of the Ark towns of Bella Vista, Rogers and Fayetteville. More cars are now being added to the lineup. I was there yesterday afternoon and additional vehicles were being hauled in. The owner let me ride with him to pick up one at the place where they've been sitting for up to 40 years. Hilly and woodsy. A variety of ages, makes and models. Some desirable to rod and custom people.....some not. The owner said he will be using two area auctioneers and will have local advertising. He said he plans on starting the smaller cars out at a $300 base bid, with larger vehicles starting at $400......as that's what he can get for them for scrap metal. He has titles for some, but not for all. No-title cars will be sold as for parts only. He is a car person, and hopes someone out there can at least use these cars for parts. Some have useable trim and stuff lying inside. Newest pictures will come first in my PhotoBucket album......about the first 50 shots up to the large Dodge flatbed. A few pics toward the middle were taken where the cars are. More pics as more cars brought in. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v96/BobT3/Cars For Sale/Cars at Hwy 71 - 90 Mar 2012/
I am seriously digging the Gran Prix and the '66 Bel Air/Biscayne 2 dr sedan! Too bad its a long ways away from me.
Will be interesting to see what kind of bids they bring. Most are probably restorable, with enough effort and $$$. I've looked inside some, and some floorboards have rusted thru.... some others don't look too bad. Some glass broken or missing.... others OK. All will need to be hauled out on a truck or trailer.
Knew of a place with lots of 50's & 60's cars in that same shape when they finally were sold a couple years back after the guy passed away. The cars were in pretty good shape when he got them 40 years ago. He would not sell anything to anybody. Just used them for lawn ornaments I guess. Horders
They are going to print flyers. Don't know what else. There have been over 1100 lookers at this post on here so far.......so a few folks now know. I posted in case anyone wants anything they have. As usual, many are too far away to get here. I can't recall having this many cars turn up at once around here. A couple years ago a guy over in Kansas bought out a collection an older guy had been piling up for years......paid over $400,000 for them as I recall. Was crushing some, but had quite a few decent ones for sale at his scrap metal yard. Don't know how many he has now....haven't been there lately. As I remember, his asking prices were reasonable on 40s and 50s stuff.
I didn't see any, but will keep watching cause no telling whats back in those woods. There are some trucks in the lot....which they plan to park in a separate row.
At first I thought I recognized some of this collection, I met a man near Avoca who has a property with about 200 cars and trucks sitting, complete but looking at the pics this is not it. I wonder if these belonged to Darrell Bone from Pea Ridge, the co-owner of the former Kent Rylee Chevrolet in Rogers? I bought 2 cars from him, he was shot in cold blood last year...long time car guy. EDIT: Ouch, I just found the 200 car stash on Google Earth...it has been cleaned out and cleared to bare earth with a few dead soldiers remaining! http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=36.4035,-94.032491&z=17&t=h&hl=en
There is a thing about a fellow being shot in the back, but the name you mentioned was not him. The current owner deals cars, some newer and some old ones and is from the Fayetteville area.
Nice assist with this sale bro. Lottsa good lookin old tin there. Hope all is gettin better in Joplin after the big blow. ~sololobo~
Thanks Solo......things are gradually improving here. Businesses are being built back, homes are slowly getting repaired or rebuilt. Our contractor told us we can plan on moving in to our new house by the end of this month (April). We rebuilt on the same location in the Duquesne area. But....there is still a LOT of bare ground so it will take a matter of a few years to get things filled in again.
Update - yet more cars added (4/15) Well, it looks like they have now gotten the number of cars displayed up to 150, maybe just a few more. Went by this afternoon to check. The little parking area up by the highway was full; several people were milling around looking at the vehicles. One young fellow said - given the fact that so many cars have been crushed a person likely won't see this great a variety of makes and models around here again. He was pleased they were being offered for sale. He's right, of course, as I know most of the old yards are long gone. I don't know if the owner will send any remaining cars after the sale to the crusher, or not. I don't think he will want to take them back to the woods. Several ARE HAMB-friendly. 47Ply....thanks for posting....funny my big boss is from Joplin and is based/lives there.....why is it home to the drags can I ask....and tell him....
Still: The HAMB conducts a drag race weekend at the last of August......same weekend as the Springfield, MO swap meet. Held at the Mo Kan Dragway, which is on Hwy 171 about halfway to Pittsburg, KS. The participants stay at the Joplin Holiday Inn and their cars are on display on the parking lot there. The customary barbequeing, beer drinking and bench racing goes on into the wee hours of the morning. Lots of fun - a bunch of nice cars and good guys and gals......from all over the U S of A. The good news, for me, is - it's only about 2 miles from my house to the site of the goings-on. Does that answer your question??
I called the number on the auction site and they said 10, but you may want to call and double check because on the site it says 7. http://www.smithsauctioncompany.com/CalendarDetail1.aspx?CalendarID=30
