    Hey,

Has anyone ever built, or seen a '49-'51 Mercury 2Dr. on a '49-'51
    Lincoln or Cosmopolitan Chassis?

I've been lookin' at the various Merc chops from the 'Golden Era'
and the contempo renderings, as well, but most of the heavy to
medium chops start to take on a "in need of a Jenny Graig work-
out" when ya start to play with that 1/3 greenhouse 2/3s body
mass. Either the 121'' chassis of the Lincoln or the massive 125''
chassis of the Cosmopolitan would give a much larger canvis to
work from, from a kustom standpoint. Hard as I try, and no matter
how many times I cover one eye, and play with different grills, I
can't warm up to the Lincoln or Cosmo doghouse, but a Mercury
nose, now that's somethin' that'd make my naughty parts tingle.
Yeah, the ass end would need some work , too, but doable?
Anybody seen or built a variant?
    Thanx,

    Swankey Devils C.C.

  3. Here's one. I don't know the difference between a Cosmo and a regular Lincoln.

  4. Pimpin there was a very good unmolested one on the bay a couple weeks back, but damnit, ugly just doesn't cover it, no matter how cheap. But I too have considered the front sheetmetal swap. And butt work.

    Hey,

Yeah, the 'design' of the Cosmo & Lincoln are an 'aquired taste' at
best. E.T. Gregorie, the major talent behind Ford,Lincoln & Mercury
design in the 30s & 40s, and the designer behind the '40 Lincoln
Continental & the '49 Mercury also had some imput in the Lincoln &
Cosmopolitan. I don't think his heart was in either of these designs!
Edsel Ford, his patron and friend at Ford, was dead. Henry Seinor,
was dead, but Henry never had any love for designers, anyway.
Those left at Ford during the late 40s didn't have much use for
    Gregorie or his designs.
Gregorie designed yachts prior to his entry into vehicle design, and
ya can really see the 'yacht design' in these vehicles. I'm guessin'
    that's where the swage/character fade-a - way lines in the '49 Merc
    door skin, came from.
The larger platform of the Cosmo & Lincoln would give a much
more massive basis to develop a kustom upon, but would require
major skill and taste. Just throughin' a DeSoto grill on one and heat-
up the springs wouldn't pull that off!
