I searched and searched and searched ...... I'm looking for a chart of the axle flange-to-axle flange widths of the Ford 8.8 rear ends.
Fellow HAMB'r "HotRodMike" needs a differential to put under his /39 Ford Coupe.
If you have any experiance of information, please share it.
    Thanks!

We could always measure mine from the ThunderChicken, I believe they are the same as the Rustangs. Mine even has disc brakes, and they should be readily availible. Ya know Pasco is open till 1:00 on Saturdays, we could go root through their stock.

Great idea John....why don't you measure yours before breakfast in the morning....since you get up with the chickens :)

We just put a 8.8 from a v6 Ford Ranger that had 3.73 gears in a 47 Ford truck. With a 351W/AOD it should scoot.......

It was about 59" wide. The rear wheels had to be 2'' backspacing, but the 8" wheels look DEEP with 2'' in and a 6"dish.

I'll get a "rough" measurement for you in the morning, as soon as I can scoot all of the chicken from under the donor Bird. :)

That may just be the ticket.....maybe a 3.25 gear ratio would be nice.

Talk to DragRacr50, I think they used a couple under different cars. If I remember right, one was a 40.

Yes, we put several under cars, I bought some new ones from a ford supplier from 2002 explorers new never installed complete units that had disc brakes and 3.55 gears, 31 spline axles , they measure 59 1/2 face to face . we put one in the 40 sedan and it was perfect. also fit 55 chevy very good...

Well thanks for posting this up bud! I looked all over and came up dry too. And thanks to all that responded. I'm tired of chasing after 57 ford rears and the like. Explorer sounds like a perfect fit. A big tip of the hat to you guys!:D Mike

There was a Ranger built earlier than mid '91 with an 8.8 about 57 1/4, if memory serves me right. On any Ranger with drum brakes, be sure you dont get stuck with the small brakes. The good news is, the big brakes bolt right on. When in the salvage yard look for a 89 or 90 Super Cab 4x4 V6 auto, if it had trailer tow it should have Traction Lok and 3.73 gears. 3.27 can be put in if you need them.

The newer ford explorer rears are about 3" wider than ranger units. I am going to get a 8.8 posi from a 91-94 explorer for my 35 dodge truck profect, it has 31 spline axles, posi,3.55-4.10 gears and drum brakes. I think it's 59". We can get em here in Maryland from Crazy Rays junkyard for $60.

  19. depending on what you want to use for wheels/tires and what offset...i think 59" -59-1/2" is a little wide for a `39 ford

I'm running a Ford 8" out of a 72 Comet in my 40 ford, fits perfectly. Real tall gears make for good gas mileage on road trips which this car was built for.

Ranger rears and Aerostar rears are the same width...and both are narrowerer than a fox-body (4-lug) Mustang which is 58" wms to wms.

Ranger/Aerostar Rears are also offset....one axle is much shorter then the other one,but each is offset the opposite way of eachother. But what`s nice is that the longer of 2 axles can be paired with a matching one to convert the 4-lug Mustang rear-end to 5-lug.

Like, you can use 2 driver side Ranger axles,2 Passenger side Aerostar axles,or a combination of the 2 in the Mustang rear.
