8.2 rearend

I have a 28 Ford coupe w/8.2 rearend and 2.73 gears. The rearend has been cut down to fit the car so I want to stay with it. Can I put in 3.55 gears w/o changing the carrier?

I'm most familiar with the Pontiac 8.2 ten-bolt rears.

The gear and carrier breakdown is this:

2.56 & 2.78 gears fit the 2-series carrier.

293, 3.08 & 3.23 fit the 3 series carrier.

3.36, 3.55, 3.73, 3.90, 4.11 & 4.33 fit the 4-series carrier.

 

Look into AFTERMARKET gears from the various vendors out there. Many make "thicker" ring gears to go on all the different carriers. And, there's always the blanchard ground spacers.
