Hey Kerry, any idea on the time rating of this delay valve? I can't find the specs anywhere.

    Same here .....
I was looking at using a time delay relay on a trans-brake/2-step limiter [in a "No-Box" class :D]
But they weren't accurate enough , I needed one to measure in .001 sec increments.

    Normally they're colour coded

So that D32E-AA would be used on a Vapor canister at 63 secs [it would be useless on a trans]
    Disregard that ^^
Ford D3OZ-12A091-B has an orange/black delay valve with a 2 sec forward delay [forward = open]

A lot of these were used on early 70's Vacuum advance dizzy's as a patch up technology for smog and unleaded low octane fuels.
They were the first thing to be binned when tinkering..

The old ones used on the 700r4's in the Australian/New Zealand Commodores are blue/black (not a colour combo on the chart) and as far as I know were timed at 8 seconds. I'm guessing it will be the grey/black that would work as a replacement (10 seconds), or maybe purple/black (4 seconds). I wonder how accurate the aftermarket ones are...????

Is it possible to get the cable TOO tight and causing damage to the tranny ?
    thx

Not really but if it's too tight, you can't get wide open throttle....and most of us want that.

The best description of an auto trans so far.

The shop that rebuilt mine made a modification inside the pan to lockup my converter with hydraulic pressure. At light throttle it locks at about the 4th gear shift. A little more throttle, and I get a slight delay before lockup. He said that if I didn't like it he could easily change it back for electric operation.

Well, a short test drive went very well. No hunting and it kicked down under load and gave me more rpms, just as it should. I went with 6 seconds and that seems ok. I have the vacuum switch set at 10" and that may need to go to about 8". Of course, longer drives will tell me more but I am pretty confident this is going to be the solution I was looking for.

PXL_20240811_212741133.jpg It took me a little while with the vague instructions from this neat little timer control but I finally got it. First, you want to run on mode 1 ( it has 18) and wire it in series to the brake switch. You need to provide a switched 12v input to it.

Second, you must run a jumper from the 12v feed on the input side of the module to the common terminal on the output. Otherwise, you won't getting any juice to the TCC, as the micro relay is separate from the inputt side..

I used a TCI vacuum switch that I already had and ended up with it set at about 10-11" of vacuum for my engine/gear setup. I tried other settings but that seemed to be my sweet spot.

I set the time for 4 seconds and it worked fine that way. If you get any "hunting" it resets the timer, which is what you want. I forgot to mention that I have OD only lockup. So, here we have an "automatic" TCC control that works with 700R4's without the annoying "hunting" and it's cheap at approx 20 bucks. The little module looks to be pretty well made but I would put it in a hot environment. Mount it under the dash or behind the kick panel. Good luck!

Another option to do this job would be to use a micro switch on the throttle arm/linkage as an on/off throttle position switch. Similar to the T400 kickdown switch but operating in reverse. It would unlock the converter at a set throttle position. Make it unlock before the trans kicks down out of 4th. With the delay relay it would work very well.
This would make the lockup system all electric and adjustable. Set and forget. The vacuum thing can get tedious, especially on engines with performance work.

Vacuum switch should unlock the converter under light load, before the trans downshifts to 3rd.

One with a bit of hysteresis would be nice, keep it from hunting between locked and unlocked.

I know. And since no one makes one with hysteresis, I developed my own time delay or electronic hysteresis. This works.

These little vacuum delay valves are what created the hysteresis in the system, but are virtually impossible to get these days.
The time delay relay is an excellent alternative. Nowhere near as simple and easy as the valves, but just as effective.
Probably a better solution when you consider the advantage of the relay being adjustable.

As far as I know, any car or truck that had a 700r4 or 2004r transmission that was not computer controlled.

would that be located near the transmission ?
