I have a 700 r4 that worked good when I took it out 5 years ago. Been under the bench ever since with all the openings, and input/output shafts bagged. Should I just replace the seals and use it? If not, what would you recommend? thanks as always.
I've got pretty much the same situation. I bought an S10 with a bad motor with 105k on the odometer. Its been sitting for probably 5-8 years. The trans fluid looks dam near new and smells fresh. If igured it won't cost me much to try it since I'm going with a 700R4 anyways. I would replace the front seal, stab it and see what happens. I was told you may have issues with sticky valves if it's been sitting a while. A bottle of Lubegard may alleviate this. If all woks out well, then change the fluid and filter and throw in a rear seal if needed.
Just used one that was sitting in the car {200k mile 86 Caprice ..didn't roll since 2001 ] works great with most of the 86 dexron 2 d in it all original seals ..it helped it was sitting in a muddy backyard
I use transmissions that have been sitting for years all the time, but they are always full of fluid in storage. As said replace the input shaft to converter seal (only because it is easy now!) and put the trans in. As long as it has been full of fluid the internals and seals should be fine, now if it was drained I wouldnt know how it would work out.
Depending on the fluid that is in it, will tell if the internal seals are going to harden within a couple of months.
If is a 1987 or earlier add this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fairbanks-7...Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec8b360ad&vxp=mtr and the Corvette servo from same Vendor and the new seals and it should live a long life.
I got a '88 700R4 that had been sitting full of oil for 10 years,,,installed it and no problems.. it was full of oil and for $125 was a good deal.
If it was operating fine when stored you shouldn't have a problem. However, make sure you have the TV cable hooked up and properly adjusted right after you put it in. If not adjusted right you can burn up a transmission by the time you drive from your qarage to the street. Frank
Full of GOOD oil is the secret to these things not rotting inside. If they are somewhat dry inside, chances are the internal seals are drying up too.
