You're 90% of the way to making it more than just an old work truck, that is if it has a "true" power steering box and not the old assisted ram power steering.
I know, I learned to drive in my older brothers 64 pickup, it had a 292/compound 4 speed and manual steering and brakes, it got the job done but it was not fun to drive.
When I changed over my 66 Suburban to disc brakes and a power steering setup from a 74 truck it turned it nearly into a Cadillac.

I can turn the truck with one finger it's so much better than when dad first got it he upgrade everything to make it a driver and he repaired all of the rust on the truck

  3. I put a 454 in a 63 (shortbed, fleetside), also with a TH 400, back in the late 80's. I was running the parts department in a little Chevy dealership... Anyway - I used the standard 3 bolt SBC mounts, and just built a 2 inch spacer (it may have been 1.5 inch, it's been a while) out of square tube with one end welded shut and drilled.

This was with aluminum heads, big cam - Comp Magnum 305 - Holley 850 dp, MSD full electronic distributor, etc; a pretty stout engine for the day.

Never had a problem with it. Would pull the front left wheel when it hooked up... Lots of fun!

I went and bought a piece of 1/2 thick plate that is 2w by 2L yesterday and it got the manifold off the frame rails and it looks like its going to work fine if I need more I'll get some more. That sounds like a fun truck if I had the money I would get me a nice set of heads a nice cam maybe do fuel injection
