so ive got a 62 falcon. car is clean as can be 2 dr. transmission is original ..believe its called fordomatic. the motor is not original, its a 200 6cyl out of a 70' maverick. transmission finally gave out.. cant get the car to catch second gear to save your life. ive made adjustments to it, send it to a friends shop and they took a shot at it.. no one is having much luck on repairing it. i suppose my next "cheapest" move is track a different transmission down.. dont know a whole lot about this type of motor or trans...motor is still running strong, it stays.. i need suggestions on my cheapest repair move on the car.. i honestly just want to get it running and sell it to get some cash to work on my f1.
Googled the Maverick and 1970 was a C-4 automatic transmission. Plenty of those around in wrecking yards?
Yeah, what Jon said. I have a 65 Falcon with a 200 out of a 72 Maverik. The C4 tranny was already in mine & the 200 bolted right up to it.
Common as dirt,Look at any 66 and newer Fairlane,Comet,Falcon/Falcon Van or Maverick. Keep in mind that the 250 six uses the v8 bell housing,Hey! Dont forget to grab the flex plate and any linkage thats there-you may need it! Easy swap! Good luck!
Ok finally got this 73 maverick transmission is what it ended up being. It is a c4 and it was a 250ci.... Yupp the bellhousing is too big. Can I change it?
Nope... That has a V8 style bell housing. I'm sure you could probably change it out to a small six style housing, but then the converter and flex plate have to be changed out as well. 10 times easier to just find a 170 or 200 six C/4 and be done. the other thing you will need is a c/4 crossmember and #2253 mount for the same. Both these can be had from falconparts.com, and others.
Just go with a manual trans, there is a junkyard in the Dayton area that has a bunch of the early falcons in it and should be enough in there to piece togather a complete 3 speed.
Found some numbers on the block.. Looks like I've got a 69 or 70 200ci inline 6 from a maverick.. Still had the original fordomatic. So it looks like I need a 66 or newer c4 from a 170 or 200? Or that's where my research has lead me to anyways
What you have is refered to as a "dual pattern block". It has the earlier pre '66 pattern that fits your Ford-O-Matic, and the larger post '66 pattern that would fit any 170 or 200 C/4 from '66 up to about '79 or '80. That is going to be the easiest and cheapest way to go. The 250 is it's own deal entirely, and is related to the 170 and 200 sixes, but is just slightly different as far as dimensions and the V8 bell housing pattern. the Ford-O-Matic was a done deal after '64, so the trans is probably original to the car and the engine got replaced at some time. Trust me the C/4 is worth the time to set up.
Yupp .. I'll start digging for a smaller c4 than what I've got. Maybe I'll fix my poor old falcon.. It's actually a super nice rust free car it's just been on the lift more than the road since I've owned it and it's been a project that wasn't supposed to be a project. I'm sure my girlfriend would like to drive it anyways, haven't taught her 3peed on the column so she can't touch my 53, when I get my f1 done I know I'll be driving that.
I went from a crappy 250 to a new 200 and had to change the bell housing, pump drive rod, converter, flywheel, and starter. Cost as much as a trans try and find one that bolts up. Now I have a full change over for the swap meet..Yay
