Here in 1969 when I bought my black 61 it was KINK radio.

  4. I listen to 7 different radio stations every week and KINK is one of them.
    Their frequency is still 101.9

Including a picture of my (now gone) 348 powered 61 so not getting too far off topic.

^^^^Cool find, but this part throws a curve in it for me....
"Our Impala is presented as a dealer installed, numbers and dates correct, SS"
So, they're presenting it as another 'what if' car as I take it, which is perfectly fine. Still way cool, but just another stuffed unicorn compared to one in the flesh.:D
"Dealer installed" has become a really handy item, or not.

Not an SS but when I was a kid my uncle had a Sohio station and a guy came in one day with a almost new plain jane lookin 61 Chevy wagon (this was in early 62) with a dual four 409,4 speed ,bucket seats and posi( I know this by the two black marks when he took off) My uncle asked him about the wagon, he said his buddie was a Chevy Dealer and ordered it for him. I was only 10 at the time but was a gearhead even then and that wagon really tripped my trigger!!

I saw this car (advertisement) some time back and thought, boy, the wording on this is one of those sneaky attempts at catching a potential buyer off guard with creative wording.
I guess if they called it a "tribute" car, it would not hook people like "presents itself" does.
A lot of over priced cars out there so "buyer beware".

Thanks @low budget and @slowmotion I'm good with whatever is at least a relevant way of bumping this thread.

  11. I though the SS option was dealer installed in 1961?

  12. There was about 450 assembly line built Impala SS cars that required buying the higher performance 348 or 409 engine. Out of the 450 SS cars, about 140 were 409's. I'd bet there were cars rebadged into SS by dealers in order to sell.

Just read this on another site look like it MAY have been possible :)

    (see italics)
"Chevrolet brought muscle car power to the people in the early 1960s, especially with the 1961 Chevrolet Impala SS 409. The mid-1961 introduction of the Chevrolet Impala Super Sport option package showcased another new arrival, the 409-cid V-8.

A bargain at just $53.80, the SS "kit" was offered on any Impala. It included Super Sport trim inside and out, chassis reinforcements, stronger springs and shocks, power brakes with sintered metallic linings, spinner-type wheel covers, and one of Chevy's earliest uses of narrow-band whitewall tires. The dashboard gained a Corvette-type passenger grab bar and the steering column got a 7000-rpm tachometer.

Only Chevy's toughest V-8s were offered with the SS kit. The available 348-cid mills ranged from a four-barrel with 305 bhp to a tri-carb with 350. The other choice was the 409. Essentially a larger-displacement 348, its upgrades included forged aluminum pistons, a wilder camshaft, and 11.25:1 compression. A single four-barrel mated to the aluminum manifold. It made 360 bhp. It also made history.

Chevy built 491,000 Impalas for '61. Only 453 had the SS package and of those, just 142 got the 409. But word spread quickly. Here was a mainstream Chevy V-8 with 409 lb-ft of torque and the ability to turn mid-15-second quarter miles with the standard 3.36:1 rear axle and mandatory four-speed manual."

This is a 1961 Belair "Sport Coupe" assembled in St. Louis that came with a 348 and three-on-the-tree.
    1961 BA 348 on frame.jpg
I started taking her apart a decade ago then stopped to do a few other projects.
I do not have the original drive train, but I did garner from the original owner (I am the 2nd) that the 348 gave itself up and was residing in a nearby pond :).
I have located and build a "period correct" 348 block with the "FH" stamping (350 horse with triple twos) but I strayed from original and slipped in a 409 crank, BBC rods and forged Ross pistons. She has the 1147 heads but now with SS one piece valves.
After I complete my current two projects (1962 SS coupe and 1962 convert, both dual quad 409 cars, but not originally) I hope to get back on this one :).
    Unless something else comes up...
    Tom

Yea, I read some of that years ago, I'm always intrigued by any 4 speed wagon.
Would like to here what motivated people to want one, no doubt, any would have been a dealer order, can't imagine the factory building any on speculation.

I just stumbled on this thread. I'm not going to read the whole thing and perhaps this has been mentioned somewhere ...

I think one of the greatest misconceptions when it comes to "SS" Chevrolets is the notion that it always has to be a performance car.In too many instances it was nothing more than a trim package.

Ok, If you wont build one by putting SS badges on a 4 door How about buying a true SS and convert it to a 4 door, then put a sign in the window that says "True Super Sport" They will never think to ask if its a true 4 door:)
Ok, Sorry, It is at least a bump tho ....Seriously, I do hope you find one.;)
