In the late 60's my Brother (not a car guy) had a maroon 1964 Chevelle SS tudor hardtop six cylinder powerglide. I remember him telling me kids always were trying to buy it.

i googled this and you are right. the "ss" option was a trim package. the "real" ss cars had the 409, etc. Scan0015.jpg

I know less about Impalas than I do women, and I don't know nothing about women! But I did recently buy a 62 nova convertible and learned that they did not make a SS version of that Chevy II 400 until the 63 model year and it was in deed an emblems package only. Same 194 six banger, 1 barrel carb, 3 speed on the tree and bucket seats, just like my 62 but it had SS emblems on the quarters and hubcaps. I did see a couple pictures of console shift 3 speeds in 63, wouldn't mind finding one of those on the cheap and retrofitting to my 62.

Douglas, you may consider this a bump... If can do so in a non sexual sort of context.

That brochure lists 305, 340 and 350 horse power available, all of which were 348's in 1961. The 409/360HP option was introduced later in the year after that brochure was printed, so no, the real SS cars were not all 409's. I agree with the earlier statements that it was just a trim package, but naturally performance RPO's were available.

    Hey Tony
I don't know about this one for sure but my eyes see SS on the quarter panel.
Anyone have a way to enlarge this photo, I tried but it distorts too much to see clearly.
This is from Mart on the vintage shots thread.

Denny you need a new pair of glasses. The emblem is clearly for an Impala. There is nothing on the top of an SS emblem.

I only see the impala over the crossed flags. The shape or script style of the SS emblems on the 61s were flat at the top and bottoms, not as curvy as the 62 and up.

Boy, I thought I was onto something there, this tablet distorts pictures bad if expanded.
Apparently I had forgotten the emblem differences.
No kid'n, about the eyesight, I can hardly even weld anymore.
Gonna have to get Inspector Clouseau on the case if we want to find this unicorn.

I tried to buy this 4dr Impala a cpl weeks ago. Last tagged in '86. 283 with ps with auto were the only options. I made a 1k offer but he thought it was worth 3k.

No Bel Air convertibles in 1961. This car started life as an Impala. I've seen this car a few times in person and the car is super nice. You will not find a real 1961 Bel Air convertible in ANY condition.

It's hard to tell but they don't look like the shape of a standard Impala flag to me. The car could have been nearly new and when he installed the '62 Impala wheel covers he went to the local Chevy dealer and bought the correct '61 SS emblems there. But then again.........well it's a shame none of the cars in question have dash shots.

In case anyone cares, that '61 St Louis cowl tag is a reproduction.
I'd love to learn about a real SS 4dr hard top, but none have surfaced yet. I'm leaving my mind open since the brochure states it could have been ordered.

As for the '61 Belair convertible, I know of two that have been built. One was from an Impala and one was from a 4dr Belair (no kidding). Chevy never made one. The one made from an Impala has a fake cowl tag AND VIN tag!

Hey Ted, Frank is correct --> in 1961, the Impala SS was available with only the 348 and 409 engines.
However, from 1962 to 1968, the Impala SS could be equipped any engine, 6-cylinder or V8. Then in 1969, it was 427 only.

A friend in HS, parents bought a 64 Chevelle Yellow SS. Since he had a 57 BelAir 3speed they bought the same again. Three on the column with black bucket seats 283 and 4 barrel. The 57 had overdrive which he didn't get in the 64 as I now recall. I don't remember a console, maybe it was deleted with the 3 speed on the column.

One of my high school pals had a 66 Nova SS, V-8, 3 speed on the column, bucket seats, and no console, there were even some 327/350 hp cars ordered this way.
It always seemed so contradictive to me, a sporty optioned car without a floor shift.
