So I finally decided to replace the rear pinion seal on my 61 f100 but now that it's cleaned around that area I'm noticing that there is a gap between the flange on the yoke and the seal. Is this normal ? I took a pic before I removed the old seal and it was completely covered in gunk and I took one after it was replaced. Anything helps, thanks Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. There has to be some space there or the flange on the yoke would rub on the seal and cause all kinds of havoc. If you torqued the nut to specs after installing the yoke you should be good.
That tin cover pressed onto the yolk is just to keep some dirt off,the oil seals on the outside diameter f the yolk,it's always a good idea to polish the od of the yolk with dine Emory cloth and oil the yolk and seal during installation ....
I did torque it down to spec and I just kinda became concerned because I've heard some use a debri shield that narrows the gap. I was wondering if it's common for these trucks to just have that exposed like that. Thank you. -Andrew Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thanks guys I fell a lot better knowing that it's normal. I tend to over think things sometimes ......Also is there a reason why some have bigger flanges on the yokes ? Like this one in the picture seems to cover a lot better than mine. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
