Projects '61 Biscayne - Mild Custom or Drag Car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by dukes26, Dec 30, 2018.

  1. Sure, leave the 'patina' but don't be offended when people say 'nice rat rod'...

Refrigerator white, button tuck interior, done....

Oh boy, I so agree Mark.
Last year the missus and I went for a country drive, go by this place with a couple old Chevy cars and pickups for sale in the yard, had to stop, wish I hadn't.
The guy had sprayed clear over all the patina/rust on all of them, what a disaster!
We beat cheeks out of there before anybody came out, was best as I might have said something I would have regretted.

Mark, I dug the hell out of that but if the OP decides to go the custom route that may have been a horrible waste of bandwidth (on him).

  7. A mild custom built fast can also be a drag car. Not all go fast cars are lifted, and not all race cars are dedicated race cars. Mild is the operative word here, keep it mild and make it fast. Nothing wrong with a fast cruiser.

  8. I agree.
Some of the guys in my home town had mild customs that they still took to the drag strip on Sunday.
Tube grill, different tail lights, etc.
Only thing is , this body style won't make a good full custom or low rider..Especially with the W motor and 4 speed.

Always thought many of the custom guys rarely raised their hoods for a good reason.
    Embarrassment.
Now watch @moriarty will prove me wrong:D
    Happy New Year y'all!

  10. Yup the roof is a killer for sure. They don't look bad dropped at all and the roof line I think is more of a personal taste thing. A lot like the flat top Buicks, you either like 'em or you don't.

I had a Mexican friend when I was in high school (actually I still have Mexican friends) that owned a '59 Impala custom, he called it the worlds lowest chebby, it ran low 13s and he even got it into the 12s once that I recall. Mild custom for sure but hot motored mild custom. he said that not all customs were low and slow.

I love it the way it is. I'd change the master cylinder and drive the shit out of it.

  12. LOL I may try and get some paint on it, even if it was not fancy paint. But I know that rust never sleeps.

Wheels are 14" Cragars from the mid to late 60s. Motor & trans have been in the car since '65 I'm told

If you ask what to do with such a car I question your cred as a hot rodder

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are many hot rods out there that have lost their historical identity to some new trend or flavor of the day paint job. The survivor that has weathered the ages and lives on tells a story of life. The heart of this veteran is strong and the fortitude to survive the 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s without some embarrassing teal green & hot pink pinstripe nightmare paint scheme is notable. The beauty of this weathered warrior is there for all to see.

Steelies out back painted body color with cheater's and leave what's on the front. Leave the body as is or paint it, it's all good but I agree with no clear.

The retired painter body man in me says paint it, the drag racer in me says it's a perfect drag car!
Ball joint spacers stock painted wheels and let her rip.

@dukes26 Did you pick that up in MN? Looks like a local car, but I thought it sold a year or two ago and I thought it was long gone from the area.
I would do black steelies, no caps, big and little skinny whites, California rake. Looking for a 61 or 2 post myself...

It is from MN. The guy I got it from has had it there for about the last 5 years. Thanks for the suggestions & good luck with your search!
