60 HP and 85 HP indentifying difference

    Got to wondering how to tell the difference on the 60 hp and 85 hp . This is a pic of the engine that is in the car i have . I have searched about but no real detail to tell them apart .

    all 60 hp flattys have only 17 head studs

    DR thank you been looking . Ok confirms this is a 85 then .

    Put them on a scale, you will notice a difference. the light one will be the 60hp model.

  7. The '37-'40 60 HP is the only flathead with 17 stud heads. '37 and early '38 85 HP engines have 21 stud heads, late '38 85 HP and all other flatheads on through '53 are 24 stud. The 60 is overall smaller than the 85. Water pump housings screw into the block on the 60. 85 HP water pumps bolt onto the front of the block and the motor support is part of the water pump housing. On 85 HP engines, the motor mounts sit directly on the front crossmember. 60 HP vehicles have ears riveted onto the crossmember, and motor mounts sit on these ears a couple of inches back from the crossmember itself.

    This is where the Guru's are at and again Thanks . I will be bringing up some more build questions on the 37 .
